Offers a glimpse into the life of a local legend that lived out in the woods alone. She is famous for her lifestyle - choosing to stay in a cabin on an island miles from civilization. There are very nicely done displays, information telling her story, a gift shop and snacks for sale. Very good family attraction.
Dorothy was a legend in the BWCA. Anyone who loves the Northland should stop by and find out more about how she lived her life. The guided tour is a must... you'll learn much more than a walk through.
I love the story of Dorothy Molter that is so perfectly told with the reconstruction of her cabins at the museum. I loved seeing her Christmas decorations, signs, and her old snowmobiles.
Very informative a part of history and endurance and backwoods service to others which was recognized by the USFS
The Dorothy Molter Museum is exactly what you would expect of a small town museum dedicated to a woman who anyone outside of the area has never heard of. That being said, the story of this woman’s life is compelling. She lived most of her life in the middle of the woods by herself. Despite nature and the Federal Government trying to push her off the land she was somehow able to remain where she wanted to be until the day she died. I would recommend checking this out if you are in the Ely area. The cost is low, the story is interesting, the root beer is good and tour only takes an hour.
I have been to the Dorothy Molter Museum probably 4 or 5 times. Each visit offers a new experience, not to mention you can't beat the delicious Kwitcherbeliakin root beer. This woman was an amazing person and truly loved the area as God created it.
I loved visiting the Dorothy Molter Cabin and Museum...what an independent woman Dorothy was...such a great role model for us all. It is not everyone who can live their life just how they desired but Dorothy did. My companion has visited the Boundary Waters often and knew the story of Dorothy and knew that I would enjoy the museum. He was right! The women who were working at the museum that day personally knew Dorothy and their stories were so genuine. It was fun to see Dorothy's cabins and I would highly recommend this museum.
