I loved this attraction it is very well laid both written and visually. The history of the area is quite amazing. The museum tells about the Lake geography, shipwrecks, shipping and the importance of the St Lawrence seaway has to the area and the economy. There is much to see here and there is a lot of displays and hands on for the kids. Enjoy!
Our family has a mild obsession with all things related to the Great Lakes. We loved our stop here! The museum has a fair amount to see and it was a great introduction to our time in Duluth.
I love seeing the old photographs of the start of the shipping business in Duluth and the beginnings of the town itself. This museum has so many artifacts of ship wrecks and shipping memorabilia. It is so informative. I love the location right on Lake Superior, next to the famous Aerial Bridge.
Many, many visits over the years and so easy to access, never too busy even in crunch tourists and always informative and interesting.I seem to find new little facts and tidbits each time, and when in Duluth this is always a must stop.
So glad we stopped in on our visit to Canal park! If you love the big ships and lighthouses this is a must see!!
If you are a fan of ships and lighthouses like we are, you will love this place. Hands on activities for kids, plenty of exhibits for adults and teens to enjoy. Great that they post a shipping schedule so you know when a ship is due to arrive or depart... Fun to watch a ship from here. And IT'S FREE. Definitely a must stop if you're walking Canal Park.
Enjoy it every time. You can go at your own pace. It's great for all ages, the young and old. So much history in one place. very interesting
Glad we took the time to enjoy! The museum displays are informative and interesting. I particularly liked the old photos, artifacts and history of the lake.
I loved this museum. We spent some time walking through it, then went outside to watch a couple ships come through the canal. Then we went back inside and, strange as it sounds, I feel in love with shipping. We didn't have time to watch all the videos in their entirety, which I'm sad about. But we did look at the models and displays. I would visit again in a heartbeat.
Stopped in with my wife on a warmer November afternoon. The museum is expertly put together featuring endless amounts of information about the harbor and admission is free. Parking is also free in the winter months, so there isn't anything negative about it. Great location to take in the visitors center and then continue to the sights of Canal Park and the lakewalk.
We visited a number of attractions while in Duluth. The Maritime Visitors Center is a must see. If you go, you are right next to the Aerial Lift Bridge and one end of the Lakewalk, so you can see those as well. The Maritime Center is a wealth of information and is a must see for those who like information/history. If you want to see and read everything, you will spend more than a hour, and I would recommend doing so. Spend some time and wait for a "thousand footer" to come through the Lift Bridge, only feet away. This attraction is free, but would be well worth it even if they charged a little. This is much better than the nearby Great Lakes Aquarium, which is not as good AND charges WAY too much. If picking between the two, spend your time at the Lift Bridge and Maritime Center.
Glad we spent a couple of hours there, learned so much about Great Lakes shipping, made the drive and visit to the light house much more moving.
It's all about location and this musuem has the best location for ship viewing expecially when it's cold and windy. You can hear the horns blow, hear the radio communication between ships and the lift bridge and view all the exhibits in the museum.
Kids loved this place, especially all of the hands on things to do. They really enjoyed the boat exhibit and spent a lot of time pretending they were the captain of the ship. Plus, it was free!
The Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center has a lot of cool artifacts from Great Lakes ships. There is even a ship pilothouse inside! There is plenty of information about the ship traffic under the Aerial Lift Bridge available as well.
