We've been to the 515 Brewing Company a number of times. Sometimes the beers are great and sometimes average. I'd like to see some consistency with the more popular beers. Can be disappointing to stop in and find out one of your favorites is off the board. Nice that you can bring in your own food or have it delivered. Glad to see they are offering local vendor food on site as well. Overall a great place to hang out.
The beers are fantastic, and that's from an avowed beer snob. Numb Nut is officially my wife's favorite beer. Ever. And I'm all in on the Dart Dodger IPA. Pains me that I only get to write about it here, rather than be sipping one. Only knock is the prices. $5.75 for a pint is steep. It's worth a special trip every once in awhile, though. If you can look past the cost, this place is the best brewery in Central Iowa.
I can't say enough about this place. The beers are wonderful, the service is always friendly (a special shout out to weekend staff Shane and Matt). It's a perfect place to hang out and play a board game, watch a game, or just chat with the staff at the bar. They also do wonderful events. I'm a big fan of when they have cupcake pairings with their beer.
The best part of fall is all things pumpkin. I read about the Punk Nut Ale in Juice and the DM Register and couldn't wait to try it. This is by far the best pumpkin ale I have ever had. It has a crisp flavor with definite hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. There is no aftertaste at all, and it goes down smoothly. If you love pumpkin beer, it is worth the visit.
We read good reviews so we wanted to check it out. I think it is a great place to bike to with a few friends b.c it is so close to the bike path. The cider was my favorite, but a few of the beers we had were pretty good. The one guy behind the bar with the short black/brown hair was so nice and helpful. He actually talked to us while he got our beers and helped us pick a couple to add to our flight. I really liked him but the other guy was more like your typical person behind a busy bar- not real helpful or personable. I do wish they sold pint glasses b.c. we buy one at every brewery we go to.
Atmosphere, food and drink were very good. Truly met the needs of four weary travelers. We sat at a table near the bar which was A Okay be the men who could watch baseball.
I was inspired to come here because it's a mile from my house and I went to school with one of the owners. The taproom is spacious, with about a dozen tables for 4, an L-shaped bar that seats about 20, a corner lounge, and some pool tables. They have board games on request, I believe. It's located on the bike trail sothere's some cycling related decor. One wall of the tap room is topped with one of the owner's personal bottle collection...which his wife was happy to get out of the house. On to the beers. I missed the tapping because of a lack of a baby sitter, so when I went the next week they were out of a few of their own beers. They had 3 on tap and a few guest beers. They had just tapped their double IPA so I went with that one. Fantastic beer! Lots of flavor without eating the enamel off my teeth. On later visits I've tried the regular IPA and a few others, overall a good lineup of quality brews. The brewery tour doesn't take long, but you can tell the owners really care about their job when you hear them talk about the process and how involved they are. I'm glad they're nearby and become a Des Moines staple.
Walk through the doors to a large open area with a few tables sprinkled throughout. A glass window so you can watch the brewers in action. Separate restrooms for male and female which were both clean and stocked well. The men's restroom has a nice addition on the urinal but I will leave that as a surprise for you. Even the ladies should enjoy this if they are true craft beer lovers. We sat at the bar where one of the (what seemed to be owners) was searching his laptop for their next great beer. Friendly and quick service and an explanation of the menu since this was our first time. We both ordered a 4 taster flight of the 3 local beers and 1 IA beer. All turned out to be very good. Their version of a 'sour' is a great introduction to sours. Well done! They do offer pretzels if you would like them, free of charge. The place was busy. We sat there for over two hours and a steady stream of couples and groups came and went. They all seemed happy. No one complained. The service was spot on. These guys care. The woman behind the bar serving pints cares. I will recommend this place to anyone. We will more than likely return. Clean, friendly, local choices. Definitely on the right track. If you want you can purchase a tshirt which are well done too. A love for running and biking must run through their veins.
We were at the grand opening of this new local brewery today and enjoyed the brews a lot. The Belgian Pale Ale and the Irish Stout were favorites. Hard to speak to service as the place was beyond packed, but it is a must-visit for locals.
