I love the Englert Theater for it's charming atmosphere and amazing performances. I highly recommend seeing a show a the Englert if you are visiting Iowa City.

Saw Seum Kuti and Egypt 8-. Small seating capacity so every seat is a great one. Audience could get up and dance. Comfortable and fun

Old movie house updated but has a lot of original features. Also entertaining. Great place for couples, but small children would be board not the kind of entertainment they would enjoy,

A cultural oasis. Varied programming; excellent artists. Take a look at the web site for upcoming events.

Very well done. The actors and musicians had you on the edge of your seat. Truly gifted musicians and actors. Definitely worth your time to see

My wife and I saw a comedy act here. The theater is over 100 years old, but it's been updated. The decor and the theater in general is pretty basic. There wasn't an actual bar to order drinks. It was two ladies standing behind a table with a copy of buckets full of beer and wine selling over-priced drinks and accepting only cash. The venue is small (i.e. intimate) and location in the heart of downtown Iowa City are big pluses. Overall, the theater was fine for a small comedy show.

Saw Mike Birbiglia here last fall, what a great space! We were in the second row, but the theater is laid out in such a way that there isn't a bad seat. Beautiful old venue with friendly and courteous staff.

Went to a concert here....after reading the other reviews that this venue was recently renovated, I was shocked! I was thinking it was in need of a renovation! It has an old worn out look to it.... maybe that was the intent? Anyway, the concert was great, and the accoustics were very good - although that may have been because for a change, the volume was not blaringly loud. The seats were comfortable, but I thought the leg room was lacking - at least in the balcony where we sat. All in all, though, it was fine. No real complaints.

The Englert is over 100 years old and now because of the restoration home to a number of musical and theatrical events. The size of the theatre makes for an intimate atmosphere and enjoyment of any production.

It took a lot of money to restore this theater, and it's now a venue for a variety of live performances as well as film. We were there earlier this month to see Arlo Guthrie. Acoustics are good (we were seated on the aisle near the back), there's a doorman to give a retro touch, all in all a pleasant experience.Parking is available nearby, some of it free; however, it's a downtown location without a parking lot of its own.

Big and small names come here. Since it is a small theater, most seats are pretty good. Beer and wine are for sale in the lobby. Nice historic theater.

Great venue to see live music you can't see everywhere The doorman is an asset, and part of the whole englert experience.

The acoustics are better here than lots of places that have concerts in the area. It is intimate and there are not bad seats really.

Lucky Iowa Citians to have this theater in town! We saw a filmed performance of a [UK] National Theatre play, "People.". The acoustics were good, the seats comfortable, and I was impressed with the overall cleanliness of the place. The doorman was a nice touch, too. Judging from the posters outside, there are a wide range of offerings in any given month -- I wish I didn't live 3 hours' away -- Zoe Keating's coming soon!

Built in 1912 amidst prosperous economic times, the Englert Theater building still stands today with a lighted marquis in front. I have enjoyed numerous productions here over the years, including attending movies at the Englert Theater as a kid back in the late 1960's when it was one large theater, then in the late 70's after it was divided into 2 smaller theaters. However at this time, It had lost a little of its former pizazz. In later years, something wonderful happened to this original theater building. After it was put up for sale in 1999, this historic theater building in downtown Iowa City was refurbished and brought to life about 10 years ago by concerned citizens and businesses A massive community renovation project occurred and it reopened in 2004 to its former style of architecture and grandeur. It now serves as a large showplace for community arts productions, local musical talent, Univ of Iowa productions and lectures, and well known regional/national artists and theater productions. Great venue at a fair price, with only a few paid staff assisted by numerous volunteers at every performance. Audiences of all ages. Includes an art gallery on second floor of theater. Support the effort through the Friends of the Englert. I volunteer here and financially support this very worthy community cause.Read more about the box office, current performances, and history of The Englert Theater at this link. http://www.englert.org/blocks.php?page=history
