raccoon river valley trail

We drove to the trailhead at Jefferson, Iowa. It was a week day in the fall so the depot itself wasn't open. The restroom was, though and we changed into our biking clothes there. We rode the trail into Clive and stayed at a motel there. The trail is really a beautiful view of the Iowa farm landscape. It is built on a railroad right of way so it is essentially flat and an easy ride. The farmers were combining in the fields, the birds were plentiful and it was easy to imagine riding on a train through there. The next day, we returned to Jefferson taking the diagonal trail to Perry. This trail was in even better condition, making the ride a real joy. We stopped in Minburn for coffee at the Casey's and had lunch at the phenomenal Hotel Pattee in Perry. We also stopped at Tojo's in Jamaica. Tiny town with this bar and grill that seems to serve as a community center. They were very friendly! All this riding for 2$ a day per person!

we rode bikes and loved the scenery. Many people were walking the trail too. there are many places to enter the trail where ever you are visiting. Just a nice time.

The paved 72 mile loop bike trail is a great opportunity for groups/families to ride without worrying about traffic or hills. The day we rode was very windy. It would be a good idea to take the wind into account in planning a ride here. The High Trestle Bridge was a great treat at night and shouldn't be missed.

All railroad grade, so no knee popping hills. Ice cream shops and restaurants and bars at convenient intervals. Beautiful scenery. Loop now available through Dallas Center and Perry.

Great for walking and birding. Nice quiet spot close to town.

If you enjoy riding your bike, you'll enjoy this trail. Will take you several miles through wooded and open farmland in Iowa. Love this trail!!
