My husband and I booked a tour of the Lewes DE historical district this past weekend. What a nice time we had. We had a guided tour by "PJ" who was very pleasant and informative. And since we were the only ones on the tour at that time we were able to take our time, lots of questions and hear lots of storys about Lewes. We strolled the streets of Lewes, learned some of its interesting history and were able to tour inside several of the historic homes and buildings. Very enjoyable!!
We enjoyed our visit to this small little town nestled on Delaware Bay. It teems with history and pretty sights.
You've come a long way baby! Congrats to all the Board, Staff and volunteers that have established a bunch of old buildings into a living work of art! The tours, store and programs make for a delightful afternoon of making history fun.
A really great place to visit. I rode my bicycle up the bike path from a little north of Rehoboth and it was a lot of fun. The preservation in this area is a pleasure to behold. This is the place to go for information about Lewes n surrounding areas.
Awesome place to visit. Really interesting shops restaurants, farmers market, and waterfront. Also is the start of the Lewes Bike Trail. You can pedal all the way to Rehoboth Beach.
A great place to stop to get information about Lewes and things to do there. Also has small display of history of town.
The LHS was holding its annual crafts fair on Columbus Day weekend (along with the Lewes "Boast the Coast" day events such as sidewalk sales and food vending. The Irish Eyes crabcake sliders were outstanding.) The fair was centered around several historic buildings. The fair and the preserved/restored houses were a treat. Visit the Cannonball House too. The first city in the first state is a great place to visit.
All the service woman wanted to do was help an old lady book a zillion tours and sell figurines :( she kept busy and was disinterested in helping us! Totally blew off our questions of what to do in the area. I would suggest just walking around and searching for yourself.
A most informative tour of the historic district led by a member of the historical society. Air conditioned trolley...it's not big so reservations are recommended.
Great little historic colonial house(I believe the original part 1665), which houses the historical society. Very engaging staff.
On a recent stroll through downtown Lewes one saturday morning my wife and I stopped into the Lewes Historical Society museum and were greeted by a enthusiastic young lady who then proceeded to give us a private, 45 minute tour of the museum house and it's history, along with the history of Lewes itself. We had a genuinely enjoyable time and walked out smiling about our new home. The whole arrangement, which includes an area of town designated a Historic District was a peaceful, relaxing respite and we were happy for our choice.
The Lewes Historical Society offers docent-led tours through a complex of historic buildings, most of which had been moved to the site. The tour took us through a couple of homes, a general store, schoolhouse and doctor's office. The buildings were all furnished with appropriate historic furnishings and artifacts. The general store and doctor's office were especially fascinating! A must for history buffs!
Very knowledgeable and accommodating folks staff this venue. Well worth visiting.
The concept is great but it's just a bit run down - badly needs a coat of paint
