January is probably not best season to visit Utah and Canyonlands, but we were absolutely happy to be there... Fantastic breathtaking views, amazing landscape covered with whitest snow and .... nobody around. I can't express the feelings when you are standing at the edge of canyon and observe endless stone prairie alone... Definitely the Best canyon park in my humble opinion
Plenty of easy hikes for us to do with our toddlers, and when the kids were too tired/we didn't want to unbuckle them, plenty to see from the car just driving around too. Very beautiful and so glad we took a vacation there with our little family. Can't wait until our kids are older so we can go backpacking and camp there too.
We are three months into a one-year sabbatical touring the US, and this is one of our favorite experiences to date. Highly recommend! If we had to choose between Canyonlands' Island in the Sky or Arches NP as a Moab experience, we would choose Island in the Sky. But, that is based on our personal preference for solitude and a variety of scenery (canyones, rivers, rock formations, salt valley, vegetation, three different surrounding mountain ranges). Arches is beautiful with its salt valley and hundreds of sandstone formations, but it is also quite busy even in winter. We drove the entire length of Island in the Sky scenic drive and often felt like we had the place to ourselves. Like with most other parks, we would highly recommend those looking for solitude to visit in the morning in winter. (A winter bonus: no entrance fee.) We would also recommend at least a few hours to fully appreciate all the overlooks. I wish we'd had time for some hiking; there are numerous options for all interest levels. One couple we passed said the one mile hike at Green River Overlook was easy and "the most peaceful experience."We considered this park's canyons and raw beauty to be only a tiny fraction less impressive than the Grand Canyon. But much more peaceful! The entire scenic drive is one breathtaking view after another. And, the most amazing part is that you can stand and observe these hundreds of miles in complete silence. We visited the first day the visitor's center was open in March, and the staff was extremely helpful. The ranger recommended the order of our stops to best take advantage of light. We highly recommend others to get there early and start with Mesa Arch to get the opportunity to get photographs without other humans in them. Although the arch is smaller than many in the Windows section of Arches NP, the view is spectacular through Canyonlands' Mesa Arch--and would make a fantastic sunrise experience! For those trying to decide between Island in the Sky and Needles, the decision should be based upon time, hiking interest, and scenery interest. Island in the Sky can be experienced in large part from your car--the entire 30-mile scenic drive (plus the 30 miles of BLM land you traverse to access the park) is one big "overlook" on fabulous scenery of canyons below and mountains beyond. Although we didn't have time to visit Needles, the ranger told us it requires more hiking to get out and truly experience what that section of the park has to offer; and, it is more of "getting into" the park rather than "observing from above" experience you get in Island in The Sky.Although I enjoyed every aspect of Island in the Sky and the drive to the park, my favorite spots were Mesa Arch and Buck Canyon Overlook. I wish we could have been there at sunrise. (If you do choose to visit for sunrise, be wary of black cows on the road during your drive in; the BLM land is open range grazing for cattle.)Absolutely loved this park. It is a great treat for all ages.
We have been to quite a few of our National Parks. Canyonlands is simply breath taking. One of the few places that you can hike right out to and actually look through an "Arch" to the ground below. Fantastic, that's all there is to it. If you are in Southern Utah don't miss this one. The big ones, such as Arches, Bryce, etc. are also worth the visit, but Canyonlands tops them all.
We only had a couple of hours to investigate the park. Made a stop at Dead Horse basin and then traveled a few more miles into the Canyonlands Park. Wish we had more time to explore all the different vistas. But what we saw was enough to make us want to return for a day or more. We noticed that down in the canyon were paths/dirt roads and we saw motorized vehicles traveling so it appears you can drive down into the canyon and see it up close.
A friend and I went on the Lathrop Trail which is over 12 miles round trip. We should have brought lighter packs as the hike back up the trail kills your quads but it really rewarding after. It's been a over four days since my trip and I can still feel some pain in my joints and I am only 27. Bring enough water and snacks but don't take more than that. Good shoes and inserts are highly recommended!
We had previously backpacked in the Needles, but this was our first trip to Island in the Sky. There are a LOT of short hikes that are great for kids. I highly recommend Whale Rock. There is a good amount of slick rock scrambling that our daughter loved. Great views from the top! We also did Upheaval Dome view point. This trail head is quite a bit busier since it has restrooms and picnic tables. Get there early for parking or be willing to circle a few times.
Compared to the awesome scenery of Monument Valley and Arches, I was a little disappointed with the northern section of this park. However my trip into the Needles section along Hwy 211 made the visit worthwhile for me. And for those with limited mobility you may want to skip the nearby Dead Horse Point State Park.
What a beautiful park! Gorgeous cliffs and views for miles. It has the feel of the Grand Canyon, though not as deep, but the views go on forever. Also the park is huge, divided into 3 large districts, Island in sky, Needles and the Maze. You could spend a lifetime exploring here if you wanted. It is certainly worth several days.
