There is so much history in this place. It takes some time to get through it all but is completely worth it.
Helper was named after the "helper" locomotive to provide extra power to climb steep grades in the surrounding hills and mountains. This museum provides an insight into the not only local rail history, but in life itself in what was a very isolated community. Well worth a quick stop. No charge to visit but donations are welcome. A little piece of Americana.
Well displayed exhibits over 3 stories to document the unique history of the area. Toured that area during the Helper Art and Music Festival.
I've been to this museum 3 times, although the first time was in 1994 and it was another 19 years before I had the opportunity to return. Many of you reading this may remember a song from 1961 called "Big Bad John" - I always assumed it was a made-up story, but it actually happened near Helper. They used to have a bigger display about Big John but when we came back more recently there wasn't as much information about him. Otherwise, most of their changes are for the better, and this is one of only 2 places in Helper than has an elevator - good thing since there are four floors! (PS The other elevator is at a renovated hotel down the street where my son recently rented an apartment after USU Eastern closed for the summer).
This is the BEST museum I have been to in a small town. They only ask a $2 donation per person or $5 family. So much thought has gone into this place and so much to see. If you like old mining towns, history, railroads and "Americana" this place is for you. On the 3rd floor there are a couple rooms of old medical/dental equipment. There is a toy room and old school room. There is an old permanent wave machine (looks like something out of a Frankenstein movie). You name it and it is probably here. The basement is made up like a mine with mining equipement etc. Something to interest everyone.
If you are spending a day or two in the area, it is worth a visit. It won't take a lot of time.
This museum is well worth the visit. It has so much to see & learn about. Absolutely LOVED it!
Take the time to drive into Helper. You'll be happy you did. The Western Mining and Railroad Museum is a a great place to stop. 4 floors of local history from the coal mines to military items to local baseball teams and civic groups. It's all here and wonderfully presented. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The museum is easy to navigate by stairway or elevator. You'll be presented with a handy writeup for your self-guided tour upon entry. By donation only... you'll want to give them more than the suggested $2.00. It's worth it. (Lot's of thinks are out in the open... this is not the place I'd bring small or rambunctious children.)
