I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The surrender house is perched high above what appears to be a fork in the river. Stunning view. A sign on the door said that it was unlocked and to come inside. The was nobody at all inside. Actually, I was glad. No distractions. I watched the video and read everything. Learned a lot.
We had just arrive at the last minute before closing. The lady who was working was very nice and informative as we shared some stories of Gen. Buckner.
It was very nice, and even though it was small the guides were very informative! I went here a few years ago and it was very cool
There's not much to see inside the Surrender House -- a short movie about the Confederate leaders' discussions on the night before the surrender. But even if you can't go inside, be sure and stop by. Stand in the banks of the Cumberland in front of the hotel, and imagine that you are a Confederate soldier standing there, waiting to board a steamship to be taken north as a prisoner of war. It'll be a step back in time.
I liked the way Dover honors its past. The building is preserved -not restored beyond recognition and made into a tourist trap.Disapointed I couldn't enter the building itself; perhaps too early in the season ?
What a wonderful experience to view and enter the house where General Grant and General Buckner actually met for the surrender terms. You can take your time with your visit. There are also picnic facilities available. Beautiful view of the river. have your camera handy.
