The last time I visited the Granada Relocation Center (AKA "Amache") was about 35 years ago, and there was no museum. John Hopper, local high school teacher and coach, has guided his students in founding the Amache Preservation Society. Over the years they have collected letters, photos, film, and artifacts with documentation to put the internment experience into context. Call ahead to make sure the museum will be open when you visit. Mr. Hopper and student volunteers answered our questions. The museum is fairly small, so the amount of time necessary to visit depends on how much material you want to examine. You can look up names of internees, examine drawings, wood carvings, and other items they made, and see the diorama to locate former camp buildings. I highly recommend visiting the museum before heading out to the camp site so that the camp remains will make more sense.
