a fantastic hike , thru some great country, not to hard to do about 7 miles roundtrip, the doggies love it, dont be surprised to see a bear or two scrambling thru the woods, this is a back country hike welll worth the visit
Directions: From Hwy 160, turn north onto Lewis St. and onto 5th St. Stay right onto Four Mile Road (this becomes FS #645) driving north 8 miles from Pagosa Springs. Turn right at the junction for 4 more miles to the trail-head. The trail follows Fourmile Creek with Eagle Mountain to the east. At mile three you will reach the Falls Creek Waterfall, which drops 300’ from the cliff above. At mile four you will reach Fourmile Falls on the right.Spilling hundreds of feet over a precipice of dark volcanic rock, Fourmile Falls makes an interesting destination in the Weminuche Wilderness north of Pagosa Springs. The Falls are among the highest in this region. We did this hike in the end of September. Hike is pretty short (3.5 mi each way), easy to moderate (some places are steep and there are places where you need to go up and down). It took us 4 hrs: 2.5 hrs on our way to the waterfall, we stopped many time s for pictures and spent some time near waterfalls itself and 1.5 hrs back. We’ve done a few hikes in the area and this one was our favorite. I actually was surprised that this hike is not even mentioned on TripAdvisor. The Piedra River Trail is nice and easier to do than this one, but Fourmile Falls definitely worth the effort. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, with all fall changing color, mountains, waterfalls … - simply amazing. I will post some pictures, but they will not do a justice. There is a restroom on the parking at the trail-head.Highly recommend this hike.
