In the years we have been going to Chautauqua one or two weeks a summer, it has changed. It has become more upscale. The clay tennis courts gave way to mini-mansions and a whole new fabulous tennis center--but no more taking your racquets over and just playing. But that's a small thing. It had to change from the 80s or it wouldn't be there any more. There is so much now to do, see, that the ever rising gate price is well worth it. The denominational houses with shared kitchens do make it affordable. There is a "aliveness" there that does remind even us old folks of the vibes of college. Just walking the grounds is a pleasure.'

Such a wonderful place to immerse yourself in all types of culture, arts and education. Beautiful lake setting and you can do as much or as little as you like. I enjoyed St. Elmo's spa for a massage. Plan to cook - as the nearby reataurants are mediocre. My parents have a house here, so it's a special, if far, place for us to unwind and recharge.

This is a wonderful place to visit during the winter. Quiet, few people. Summer crowds gone. Beautiful to wander the snow covered streets. This weekend was brutally cold but we still enjoyed our walk.

This is the place the Chsutauqua movement started. Leave your car in the parking lot and spend the week walking or bicycle riding. This place started as a retreat for Methodists and has expanded to a place to share ideas and learn. I find it like going to college without the tests. Plays, music, opera, and lectures. Generally eclectic. You are paying a gate fee for the programming. If this does not sound good to you, then head someplace else or you will be unhappy. If it appeals it cannot be beat this side of the Mississippi (I have not been to the one in Colorado).

Great music, art and programs at the institution. Setting is inn a Victorian style. Also great fishing on Chautauqua Lake.

Well if you have never experienced Chautauqua Institution, put it on your bucket list. I sang with our grade school choir when I was twelve years old at the all county music festival in the amphitheater, there and I knew then, that my soul had been positively affected by everything Chautauqua embodies. There is really no way to adequately describe this center for the arts ,education, recreation, and religion, you have to be there. I have been visiting Chautauqua for years. Chautauqua remains timeless with its elegance and beauty. It has become a favorite of mine during its summer season. If one understands its history and roots, there will be a greater appreciation for the Institution. Their plays are a treat to see and a venue in their auditorium is an experience. I most enjoy walking the grounds, grabbing a meal, parusing their book store for a good read, and relaxing with a beverage and enjoying the scenery. It has become very expensive just to take a day trip for sightseeing so you may want to plan on taking in an event. You may also want to purchase tickets ahead of time as they sell out rather quickly. It truly is a place where past meets present.

I lived there. My father was the president of Chautauqua years ago and I loved walking or XC skiing to the post office for the mail. Of course there was a stop at the fantastic bookstore. That was the daily social interaction back in the '70's. Now it's more expensive and more Disney-esque.The place on the map was not Clinton, it was FDR giving his I Hate War speech from the Miller cottage. I ran into the Millers a year ago, over 500 miles from Chautauqua. We were all walking our dogs and got a chance to "catch up" with the descendent of Chautauqua's co-founder.Chautauqua comes back to you and especially the Amphitheater which I recall from the old days. It would be sad to let it go. Plan a week and go to Chautauqua. I got to meet Bucky Fuller, Henry Mancini, Burl Ives and Tony Bennett there. Must get the latest Bennett CD.

While there are no lectures occurring at this time of year, it's a great way to wander the grounds and feel your way around to look into potential rentals. The library and bookstore are still open. The library is a WEALTH of information and hospitality! We could have spent hours there! It's gorgeous and such an intimate, take yourself back in time experience. We will definitely go back during open season.

This place is out of the public eye, but spectacular. You're well protected. You have views that you usually can't get anywhere else in Chautauqua County. It's very secluded. Not to mention that the President of the United States (President Clinton) stayed here. That in itself should be an attraction in itself.

Chautauqua is a place where you can Step-Back to the 18th & 19th century, a quaint Village of Victorian homes located on the shores of Lake Chautauqua, between Westfield NY and Jamestown NY. Lucille Ball grew up around here and her career in show business is celebrated.You can walk the grounds or use a bicycle, as cars are limited. The village reminds you of a "Movie Location". Thomas Edison once lived here. Past United States Presidents have stayed at Chautauqua. Entertainers, Actors, Singers and world Leaders have visited here.I like it because Entertainers perform at the Theatre during the summer season of July & August.I also like the Golf course across the road with 36 holes to enjoy the superb greens and fabulous hilltop views of Lake Chautauqua. Many lectures, camping, b&b available, on the water if you you want to pull your boat up. Music of all kinds and named concert events. Parking a bit of a pain and not park of your ticket. Some events free some not so free. Call for brochure scheduled events or go online..."chatauqua institute"

This may be one of the best kept secrets around. The place is hopping in the summertime with an array of programs and entertainment that is rich in variety and quality. Even if you do not attend an event here, walking through the well-kept Victorian community is a little like being in a living museum.

We visited off season so were able to drive through the streets to view the beautiful homes and buildings within the institution.

This unique community has been around since the end of the 19th century, and generations of participants have been coming to Chautauqua year in and year out. For nine weeks each summer, thousands of people descend on the grounds to take in lectures, concerts, plays, and recreational activities. Located directly on Chautauqua Lake, the glorious Victorian structures here enhance a spectacular setting. We were there one week after the high season so that we could drive onto the grounds and spend a whole day sauntering around, viewing the Institute's own buildings as well as the hotels, guest houses, and amenities. Everything was beautiful and peaceful. Chautauqua is a self-contained community with its own services and attendant fees yet one can stay there in a guest house, as we did, without being part of the group. it's well worth doing! We wouldn't have minded staying an extra day or two.
