The staff at Hermann J. Wiemer were wonderfully hospitable to our group that showed up late in a snow storm. From outside the winery looked like a quaint barn. Inside, there is an awesome production area and very clean and modern tasting rooms. The wines are very high quality and flavourful - and we purchased several bottles. Thanks to Jeremy for making us feel welcome from the time we booked our stop till the moment we left.
I'm sorry that I just visited this winery for the first time, when I've been going to Seneca Lake for 8 years now. Staff was great. The owner did our tasting - Oscar is lively, welcoming and just makes you want to stick around. They had fantastic Rieslings and Cab Francs. Several great blends (the Red Cuvee was very nice). This will always be a stop on our annual trips from here out.
This vineyard is fantastic. They take their work very seriously, produce excellent, award-winning wines and are on the cutting edge of wine development in the United States. They're a growing enterprise with a lot of foresight. The property is beautiful and the staff is warm and welcoming, but also extremely knowledgable. I have visited well-known vineyards in Napa, France and Italy that pale in comparison. Seneca Lake is also a very pretty, quiet, romantic weekend getaway spot.
We have been visiting Hermann Wiemer for several years and love their riesling wines. This time we couldn't decide if we liked the dry or semi-dry best, so we had to purchase 6 of each that we'll be able to enjoy throughout the year. The winery has changed quite a bit since our first visit years ago and for that, we're a bit sorry. It used to be a very small tasting room which is now the entry area where you actually purchase your wine. It was much cozier then, but like everything that is successful, things change. The tasting room is now a large area in a barn type building with multiple tasting areas. The servers are knowledgeable, but much more formal. The wine is still just as good, but I must admit the miss the intimacy of the earlier days.
The Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is a serious winery that feels like a real working farm winery. That are a lot of wineries in the Finger Lakes that are more focused on the tourist trade then on the actual business of growing grapes and making lovely wines. Wiemer is certainly one the ones that is focused on making world class, mostly estate wines. They are well recognized in the wine press an outstanding winemaker. This recognition is not just in comparison to other Finger Lakes establishments but worldwide. If you visit the region for the wines make sure not to miss this one.The tasting room is really a part of the winery, pouring bars are in the same room with stainless steel fermenting tanks and riddling racks for sparklers. Pourers are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The breadth of wine styles is impressive but you probably want to focus on the Rieslings. It is after all what the region is known for.In my opinion the best wines on offer are the single vineyard Rieslings like the Magdalena or Joseph vineyards labels. We got a magnum of the 2012 Magdalena to go with a holiday turkey, seriously good pairing. Dessert wines are a real treat. Complex flavors with lots of acid and plenty of fruit.
I wish I'd have recorded the names of the two staff who helped us. They were helpful, pleasant, and patient. Oh, they're probably well trained, but you have to like people to be so nice. Of course, serving good wine doesn't hurt your customers' moods...So, the wines: We thought we were red wine drinkers because most white wines at wineries we've visited were at best decent (except for one in the TX Hill Country that makes excellent ones). However, we were pleasantly surprised to find that we really enjoyed each wine we tried, and it was hard to choose. We ended up getting a case of Riesling and Gewrtzdaminer varieties, which is what this region's becoming known for. But, we included some Cabernet Franc, which was surpringly sip-able, and also went very well with an Italian meal we had at a Watkins Glen restaurant.Beyond the regular tasting, we each ordered a glass of wine to sip on their patio and enjoy the mild fall weather. The wines must be good per others' palates, because we got into pleasant conversations with other couples. All in all, a pleasant experience.Since we live in Texas, which does well with warm weather grapes, which go with steaks and such, we had the staff ship the case to us via UPS. That went well, though next time we'll use a UPS store as the shipping address, so we don't have to worry about missing the delivery. And we WILL be ordering more. We'll also have to alter our dinners a bit. Our waistlines will probably thank us.What about the rest of our winery itinerary? We'll have to come back. But if you only have time for a short visit, you'll do quite well at Wiemer.
We drove around for days, tasted wine after wine, came year after year, but let me tell you, the comment is always the same no matter who we bring along. "Why didn't you bring us here first?" There wine is one you will want to take home and enjoy yourself. It kills me to give this wine away. I buy more each time I go.
This is the last of 10 wineries my husband and I visited on a 4 day stay in the Finger Lakes, and it was one of our favorites. The wine hostess was both friendly and knowledgeable. We are not always fond of Chardonnays, but the one we tasted here was so good we took some home. I'm so glad we didn't skip this winery. It was a fitting end to a wonderful vacation.
Visit the tasting room next to the tall wine vats and breathe in the aroma while tasting some fantastic dry Riesling.
Wiemer Vineyard is home to some terrific wines. The tastings are held in the same room as wine production which provides a terrific atmosphere. The staff was friendly and helpful even though they were busy.
