Visited last summer with my cousin. Hiked all day between Robert Treman and Buttermilk Falls (Parks are connected with a trail or just drive two miles down the road and park at Buttermilk Falls). A great day trip especially with kids. Pack a lunch and bring water and you'll have a great time! There is a fee to park your car, like all NYS parks, but ticket is good for Robert Treman and Buttermilk Falls!
This park has been around for years and years. As a 70+ person, I can remember this park as Enfield Glen as a child and it is still a great park. At the bottom of the stream is a wonderful swimming pool fed directly by a wide waterfall and a large campling and picnic area while the paths to the top of the park are a challenging but scenic hike to another picnic area. As a New York State park, entry is free but parking does cost. Located just a couple of miles south of Ithaca, access to the park is very easy.
Robert Treman State Park is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth. I go there regularly and can't get enough of the spectacular waterfalls and gorgeous hiking trails.
We take all of our out of town visitors to this park, weather permitting. Our strategy is to go in two cars, drive to the lower park entrance and park one car there, then drive everyone to the upper entrance and walk down. There are many stairs and we allow plenty of time to take photos, as new vistas reveal themselves around each turn as we wind down. The view of the falls is the most spectacular, but there are wonderful photo opportunities in many places along the way down. If we are short on time, we will go in one car only, park at the upper entrance and walk in far enough to view the falls and turn back and retrace our steps.
This park is a gem. There are "upper" and "lower" parks, entrances about three miles apart. Lower Treman Park has camping, a swimmin' hole, and picnic areas. Upper Treman Park has a pavilion, picnic areas, and is generally more "nature-y". There are trails that connect the two, and some other trails in the woods. The "Upper Rim Trail", which is a loop and whose trailhead is at the upper park, is the place to go if you want to see the most wonderful and dramatic views. It's a short walk, although has many stairs. It's easy to do in 30-45 minutes. It includes amazing views of Lucifer Falls, and is probably the most dramatic example of the area gorges. This is the trail to take people you want to impress with natural beauty, especially those who have never been to the Ithaca area.
One of our favorite places in Ithaca. We go back over and over with the change of seasons, the park shows off its natural beauty. Picnicking is delightful and there is swimming in the summer. A must see park in Ithaca!
This is beautiful, special place that characterizes the beauty of Ithaca. Go there any time of year!
Best place to cool off on a hot day! The hike is absolutely breathtaking and the swimming area is at the base of the gorge.
This park is simply splendid. But also one of the harder hikes locally. The upper trail is great once you get up there - woodsy and peaceful . The gorge trail is rough, up and down a lot and hard work. Beautiful cabins I want to try. Visit both ends.
Do not miss a hike through this park. It is a perfect example of the gorges which make this area so unique and beautiful. Be sure to begin at the upper entrance to the park where your hike will be downhill for as far as you want to take it and still have a not too strenuous hike back up. Also it is the prettiest part of the upper gorge with the best view of the waterfalls. Try to time your visit for just after a rainfall in summer for the best flow of the falls. Keep an eye on young children and believe the warning signs. They are not kidding around. Do not be tempted to swim as the bottom is very slippery and the flow of water unpredictable. Though beautiful the gorges can be dangerous if not respected. Be aware that the gorge trail is closed off in winter and until the ice is gone and it can be inspected, usually until late spring. Call ahead for info.
Picturesque and must visit if you are in Ithaca. Make sure you are wearing the right shoes as the terrain can be steep at places and have your drinks and energy bars handy as it is a relatively long hike. Rest enjoy the view and the experience...
Beautiful park to visit in every season....we went in October so the foliage was just gorgeous. Not far from Ithaca so this can be included in a trip to that area.
Want to feel like you are in Tahiti right here at home? Visit Robert Treman State Park in the Fingerlakes region of upstate New York. The gorge hosts fantastic waterfalls, ferns dripping with crystalline water, hummingbirds flitting from flower to flower. Walk through eons of sculpted rock while viewing pools of deep clear water shaped like puzzle pieces. Dip your toes in and feel lost in a world only native Americans knew. Then head over a short distance to the Ithaca Beer Company's fabulous tasting room for a cool one!
I particularly am drawn to this park. The lower portion is fun in the summer for swimming and sports. The upper trail is great from spring through the fall. I find this upper trail very peaceful and take company whenever they come to town.
This was a wonderful surprise. We starting visiting the Finger lakes 4 years ago. We have been to The Gorge at Watkins Glen & it's beautiful. This year we thought we'd branch out to Ithaca SO GLAD WE DID.. I think I like this more. We were going to start at the bottom & hike the 2 1/2 miles but we decided (wimped out after a breathless 1/2 mi straight uphill) to drive to the upper lot & hike the 1/2 mile gorge trail SO AMAZING!!!
