$14.50 for basic bus tour of West Point, with a couple of off-the-bus walkarounds. Good way to get the lay of the land and hear some West Point history and tales. Recommended.
I visited the academy before 9/11. At that time, I was single and drove my car there. Now I took my wife and 10-year-old son there on Friday. We took a one-hour tour, which cost $36, if I am not mistaken. This made me hate terrorists more. They cost me money, and limited my freedom. Believe it or not, we were asked again to show our photo ID, like passports, when a guard boarded the bus in front of a gate. On the other hand, I benefited from the tour guide. The lady is rather informative. At one point, she choked bit when she mentioned the tragedy of the civil war. I like the place for two reasons: its natural beauty and its unique institution. West Point overlooks the Hudson River, which bends here twice. In the good old days, such bending would slow down sailboats and made it easy for garrisons to attack invading ships. At Trophy Point, we saw all kinds of enemy cannons and guns captured by American troops in all major wars. Some old chains were on display. They were used to block the river during the revolutionary war. The best part of having a guide is to listen to interesting stories. Cadets are much disciplined, paying attention and follow order. If you are late for class, you will have to walk five hours in the yard. If you cut class, you will walk for 10 hours. If you violate rules, you will have to walk 100 hours. Cadets receive $900 stipends a month, and study like regular college students most of the time. Their breaks are much shorter, and have to do military training mainly in the summer. Upon graduation, they are commissioned as second lieutenant. They are supposed to serve 5 years in active duty and then 3 years in reserve. Each year, up to 15 foreigners are admitted, paid by their own governments. Men and women received almost identical training. Women do not take boxing lessons, but are required to take lessons on martial arts. The college boasts of many famous alumni. Grant and Robert E. Lee led two sides in the American civil war; Eisenhower was disciplined for his disrespect to teachers; MacArthur was the superintendent before WWII.I learned so much in one hour, but still think that the price is exorbitant.
Very informative tour. Easy to obtain tickets. Covers a good bit of the campus and history. We both learned something. Beautiful campus.
Was really good trip. We took expended 2 hours tour. Was very interesting. Tour guide was very good and knowledgeable. Nice museum right behind the visiting center. Free admission. I recommend for families. it will be great quality time to spend with your children.
Suggest you arrive early. We arrived just in time for the 1 hour tour at 9:45 a.m and there were only 4 of us. Not having to wait for lots of people to get off and on the bus we had more time to learn about West Point. Our tour guide was a West Point graduate and really knew the history as well as having first hand knowledge of the experience. We walked through the chapel and were given plenty of time for questions and pictures. We walked around Trophy Point and the Plain where the parades are held while being given the history. There are displays in the Visitors Center about cadet life that were very interesting. Next we visited the museum which is adjacent to the Visitors Center. There are truly impressive displays and well worth scheduling several hours to take advantage of all that is there.
We took a bus tour of the bucolic West Point Campus with a knowledgeable and personable guide. Stops included the Chapel, the playing field and a visit to an adjacent meadow with cannon and impressive war memorials. This overlooked the portion of the Hudson River that was blocked with an iron chain during the Revolutionary War to keep the British ships from attacking New York. We spent a lot of time in the chapel, which had a very impressive pipe organ. It was purely by coincidence that we happen to be Jewish and the rest of the tour bus Israeli. During the chapel stop the bemused guide was barraged with questions about the synagogue, which we later glimpsed briefly only in passing. We saw a female cadet resplendent in full dress uniform on her way from having her senior portrait done and two others doing tai chi exercises. The guide pointed out, among other things, the yard where cadets walk off demerits, the equestrian hall, the science center, the sports complex, the commandant's residence and, across the river, the Gothic house used in the film the Wizard of Oz. The campus is steeped in history and, as you would expect, very well maintained. Definitely worthwhile.
This was my second time. I brought my parents who were from other country. We signed up for 10:30 am 10/20 West point campus tour in the visitor center. A short figure lady with British accent was our tour guide. At the beginning, she seemed not too happy to see only about 10 people were on the bus during the 10:30 tour. We were the last bus left the parking lot and first bus came back to the parking lot, I wonder she just want to come back sooner... She just keep talking throughout the trip, didn't even leave ANYTIME for the people on the bus to take pictures at all!!!! when we were in the first stop-chapel area, I was telling my father there would be a time to take pictures based on my previous experience, but NO, not at all, she didn't even let us go in the front of chapel to take a look, she let us to sit in the middle of chapel and listen to her talk, then asked us to leave with her, my father run quickly to the front to take a picture and she was angry at us saying" you are with group, you understand"...what a rude old lady!!!!!,. My parents were very upset about her attitude, I can't find where I can complain this lady, so here it is, West Point! you are ruined by a talkative lady! We pay the tour in order to visit a nice campus and take pictures, not for a LECTURE for the entire tour. Shame on you, British Accent Lady! I forget her name she talked in very low voice and her speaker never worked until the last five minutes...
My husband and I went on a two hour tour which began on a very comfortable Trailways bus in the parking lot outside the visitors center. The grounds of West Point are beautiful. We are on and off the bus 3 times seeing different sites. The tour leader was very informative and answered all questions that anyone had. The two hour tour includes approximately 45 minutes visiting the very solemn cemetery but it is well worth the visit. It was very informative and surprising to visit the graves of many people that I never knew were buried there. We also visited the chapel which was beautiful.I am handicapped and use an electric scooter. My husband stored the scooter in the luggage storage area on the bus in between stops on the tour. The scooter was able to navigate the uneven terrain through the cemetery and other hills put pushing a wheelchair (if anyone who used one was interested in doing this tour) would be challenging but doable. To do this tour, however, a person would need to be able to board the bus.We learned a lot and I have high respect for the men and women cadets who have or are attending West Point. Highly recommend this tour!
So beautiful. So interesting. Stand where honorable men and women have stood who served our country with their lives for generations. The stories told here and the importance of this facility should be missed by none!
Great narration - don't miss the home football games for teh Cadet reviews and seeing the Corps in Michie Stadium.
We enjoyed every minute of the one hour tour. Joe was our guide. Stops were made along the route and Joe did an excellent job explaining all the history involved about West Point and the USMA. It's a definite must if you visit West Point.
This is an interesting tour with lots of military history and spectacular views of the Hudson from Trophy Point. Our tour guide John was a Brit with extensive knowledge of West Point. We opted for the 2 hour tour which has more an extensive cemetery portion where the guide pointed out headstones of some famous heroes. We enjoyed our tour. With the exception of the two chapels, we were not allowed into any academic buildings so there was no interaction with the cadets or any glimpse of the cadet life. Here are some tips for your tour:1. We have 7 and 10 year old boys and they showed signs of boredom during the long walk in the cemetery. For those with young children, the 1 hour tour may be better.2. There is no stop for food & drinks during the tour so I recommend bringing a bottle of water and some snacks. Also, go to the bathroom before the tour as there was no bathroom break as well.3. Spend about 30 - 45 minutes at the visitor center to check the short movie and the exhibit about cadet life. You can also pick up your tickets at the tour counter there. Note, online tickets are $1 more than those sold at the counter.4. Before/after the tour, you can also visit the West Point Museum behind the visitor's center. They have excellent displays of weapons, galleries of West Point and the Army. It is also free! I recommend allocating an hour or two depending on your passion for military history.5. There are 2 gift shops, one at the visitor's center and another at the museum. They are both different and worth a look.6. You can either bring your own lunch and eat it at a shady bench outside or else there are restaurants across the street. We especially like The Ice Cream Shoppe where they serve delicious ice cream at affordable prices for the size. Their $3 small cup is probably a medium at most other ice cream shops.7. Bear Mountain is nearby so you an visit Bear Mountain before or after your West Point trip.8. The best time to visit West Point is probably during the fall when leaves change to brilliant yellow, orange, brown, and red. Definitely do not miss the Trophy Point stop as the view of the Hudson is spectacular!
I took a 2 hr. tour of West Point on a recent Saturday afternoon. The guide LaNon was excellent. She was well informed, had a great personality and made the tour thoroughly enjoyable. Even though I have visited the USMA many times before, I learned a great deal during the tour. The Visitors Center where you buy your tickets and start your tour is just outside the main gate. It has an amble parking lot, interesting exhibits and a movie. Even though the tour is by bus there is some walking involved.
We booked a one hour tour - great way to see the campus (only way since 9/11). The one-hour tour includes the chapel and trophy point. Our guide was very informative and great at answering all our questions. The lady we had at the Visitors center was very helpful with getting us setup and pointing out best times to take a tour. The grounds and views were beautiful.
