here it is, four days before Christmas, within a half hours drive of the dreaded buffalo, and you can still play golf here... shop isn't open, no carts, of course, but the place is in late-may condition and the holes are in, even if the flags are not... and ground unfrozen... don't even have the honor box up, but slip a few bux under the door or some back when the restaurant is open....

Fun short course and in good shape. great prices and great staff. Played in 1 1/2 hours and had fun.

Gothic Hill Golf Course off Lower Mountain Road in Lockport, NY, offers a delightful par-three experience. The terrain, on the Niagara Escarpment, is mildly hilly and attractive, but readily walkable. Carts are available for a modest fee. The restaurant offers snacks and tasty burgers and sandwiches as well as beer and colas.

Here's an extraordinary inviting little golf course -- par 28 -- adorning the side of the Niagara Escarpment, that geological dotted line which runs all the way from Hamilton, ON, to Central New York... There are enough elevation changes to provide a challenge, and while the spaces from one green to the next tee remain a bit bumpy, this seven-year-old course (approximately) has grown in beautifully while remaining one of the region's great secrets... caution: many weeknights leagues take over the course, so call, but it's usually wide open until 3 p.m. or so... a fine lounge, now known as The Gin Mill (after co-owner, wedding singer Ginny Miller, see review under restaurants), offers super snacks and well-tapped brews, a definitive 19th hole (except that Gothic Hill has only 9 real ones... the price is right, too, and while they'd be crazy not to impose an increase, usually two seniors can get around with a cart for less than $25
