A much easier way to travel North from long Island. Why deal with I-95 in Connecticut when you can relax on the cross sound ferry
Drove up 95/ New Jersey Turnpike from Baltimore area to Bayport,on Long Island to meet up with a friend of mine. Next day we headed to Orient Point. We picked up Sound Ave just northeast of Riverhead and had a wonderful ride through the farms and vineyards along the north shore of the island out to Orient Point and the ferry. We had a 12PM reservation but no problem getting us on the 11AM since we were early. Ferry ride was relaxing. It was late June and the weather was perfect. No chocks or tie downs for the bikes were necessary. A few days later we took the ferry back to Long Island. Again we were early, again no problem getting on the earlier ferry. Same relaxing ride. So for $60 round trip we avoided countless hours of aggravating highway traffic and got two relaxing boat rides instead. Can't beat it for Long Island to New England
Hate to drive west off long island just to go east in Connecticut? If you have never taken the cross sound ferry, I suggest you give it a try. From either direction, it will shave time off your trip and dollars off your gas bill. Enjoy the view of the sound on a quick trip rather than stare at a bumper of a car.
the ferry is the way to go out of long island beats sitting in traffic the views are amazing and no stress
Just wanted to share my latest experience with the staff of the cross sound ferry both in Orient, NY and New London, CT. I mistakenly bought one ticket too many and was promptly issued a refund on the spot. The following morning we needed to get out of Boston and back to Long Island before a snow storm hit. The customer service office couldn't have been more accommodating to help me purchase a ticket and advise me that the seas were calm at that point. The woman made me feel at ease about taking the ferry. The staff in the ticket office as well as the crew at the dock are extremely pleasant and helpful. Makes for a very pleasurable experience.
although far from inexpensive, this 45 minute or so ferry ride across the Long Island Sound from the tip of the north fork of Long Island to New London CT is an extremely pleasant way to avoid miles and miles of traffic through NYC and most of CT.
I looked up rates last night and there was a very good discount for the travel across. I did not want to buy the ticket right now because I was waiting on my friend to make sure she made it, there is a bad winter storm coming from the east and she was traveling hoping to miss it or be able to make. So today I went and the prices almost double even with the discount given on the website. I called to possible talk to someone that would understand my circumstance and to help me out. I was surprise to be spoken to like a person from the dirt, they were very rude and also would not help in anyway. I am very upset at this and now I am going to have to drive 5 hrs to get my friend. THANK YOU CROSS SOUND FERRY JERKS!!!
Cross Sound Ferry Service is a very convenient way to travel between Long Island and eastern Connecticut. We use it to visit family in Boston and it works very well. It is pet friendly with assigned areas. We were particularly impressed recently when a crew member offered coloring books and crayons to youngsters to help pass the time. I like the requirement of vacating your vehicle and having to go to the cabin. Other ferries allow people to stay in their cars , sometimes while running, during the trip which I think is a safety issue. Weather can influence the quality of your ride but to get from LI to Boston you can't beat the time saving and convenience. We find the crew courteous.
Fastest transportation from long island to Connecticut. Always on time. Reasonable prices. Plenty of seating.
considering the amount of time you'll spend on the Belt Parkway, leading up to the Verrazano Bridge, and the outrageous tolls, before you reach the New Jersey Turnpike, take the ferry, car and two passengers, about $65, a very enjoyable hour and 20 minute crossing, fairly close to i-95, a nice ride through Connecticut, and if you're heading south, follow the signs to the George Washington Bridge, no tolls going to New Jersey, deduct the towels you would have paid for the Verrazano Bridge, and that other toll for I don't know what, the ferry is a real bargain, you will save time, have a nice little ride on the ferry, see some different scenery, and save a ton of time compared to sitting in traffic. I had a 6 p.m. Reservation and arrived early, they put me on standby, and got me on a 5 o'clock ferry, at no additional charge, I found the staff to be very professional, and friendly, food is available on the ferry, at reasonable prices. follow the signs, to i 95 south, watch carefully as sometimes they are small and hard to see.
The personnel are very rude and not helpful at all. On some ferry's they make your passenger get out of the car. You have to ask them a couple of times to not have your passenger get out of the car and meet you upstairs. You cant stay in your car while on the ferry. If you don't have a reservation in the summer you are screwed. I would ovoid this ferry and take the Port Jefferson one.
Sounds like a wonderful opportunity to have a ride on the boat while traveling to NYC, but I got there at 2pm to get on the boat, but there was no spot. So I went online right away and reserved 3:30 pm spot. Before exiting parking lot stopped to ask guys, working there, what time I should come back , is 3pm better. So in response he asked me what time is my reservations? I replied its 3.30pm. Then you should be here at 3.30. Surprisingly coming back at 3.30 my spot was filled with other car on the boat and they wouldn't put me on the next coming boat, and I would have to wait another couple of hours to MAYBE get on their boat!!!!! I was treated horribly by their staff and maneger. Worst experience ever!!!! Would NEVER recommend this service.
We decided to take the Ferry from Connecticut to Orient NY. Very good decision and cut off a lot of driving to NYC. Ferry does a good job and all staff on board was courteous and professional.
On the book tour, we were half way out on Long Island and had a Boston date the next day. The Cross Sound Ferry saved us a great deal of time and traffic hassles, by shooting directly over to New London. Basic Ferry service, but helps you avoid NYC traffic all together if you need to be up in New England.
My girlfriend and I took the Susan Anne from New London to Orient recently. The biggest issue was the fact the website kept giving an error indicating an incorrect date format when all you do is click on the calendar day. This happened both on my smartphone and on a public computer. Because of this I called and was quickly taken care of. I was emailed a receipt that I showed via smartphone as we entered and were able to pull right into line. Boarding was easy, but very tight. Smacked a side mirror on something, maybe the wall. I drive a Chrysler minivan for some perspective. The voyage over to Orient was pleasant. This ferry is similar to others I've been on in the past. They do have food, drinks, and bathrooms so no need to worry about those things.Overall a good experience and I would travel the Cross Sound Ferry again.
