Teddy Roosevelt's summer home overlooking beautiful Cove Neck. Interesting and worth a trip, as long as you don't mind the stuffed animal heads on the walls, which is truly not my thing!
We arrived almost by chance, knowing it was closed for refurbishment. The grounds, open all the time also in winter, are on the top of the hill and very pleasant, in particular at dawn, with splendid light making the house even more beautiful. The chair of the President is there, on the deck, looking out to the valley. A very emotional place for those who know about Teddy. Once the house is open again it will be difficult to be so alone, the four of us. Beautiful. The shop was open and very warm, which was useful today. A great place for America.
Sagamore Hill is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Long Island. This is the home of one of America's most outspoken presidents. "Father" of the Teddy Bear and a devoted naturalist, Theodore Roosevelt is the only Long Island resident, to date, to ever serve as both Governor of New York State and President of the United States. There is a great deal of open land to walk around the area, a nice gift shop, and an interesting tour of the house.
Spent about an hour touring the facilities at Sagamore Hill. Being a history buff that has visited most of the presidential libraries and family sites around the nation, we were visiting the local area for a wedding and couldn't pass this up. Since the main house is down for renovations, we walked the grounds around the house that included the main porch, and took lots of pictures. The museum contains many artifacts taken from the main home that will be returned when its finished. Although the museum was small, it did contain some great information and films that mapped out Roosevelt's life from childhood though the presidency on to his legacy. If you don't take the walking tours, the visit lasts about an hour with 15 minutes at the house (due to renovations) and 45 minutes for the museum. Leaving the place, I had a much greater appreciation for his impact on the nation and the presidency, and why his is considered one of the best presidents of all time.
My wife and I visited this site last week, and we enjoyed it. The house is closed for renovation, however the museum in Teddy Jr's beautiful house is very interesting
The house was still not done in the middle of August. It was wonderful to walk around the grounds and see the outside of the house. I grew up on Long Island. When I was a child we could see Sagamore Hill from West Neck Beach, that is not possible anymore since the trees grew up so much in the last 40 years. The male park ranger who was on shift that day I can't recall his first name it began with the letter "J" I believe Josh but do not hold me too it. He very knowledgeable about the Roosevelts on the Island and the ones from Hype Park. About the estates in both regions and the travels of Teddy when he was out west. Also how one of the workers on the estate would pick Teddy up in Hicksville or Syosset when the reporters were at the Oyster Bay train station. This was so Teddy could get to Sagamore Hill without being bothered by reporters. What surprised me was that reporters were not at Mineola to make sure to see which train Teddy was on. The ranger also was very well informed with the Vanderbuilts and the Comordore. I would like to take my kids into the house to show them how the side lives back during the guilded age. It is also a wonderful drive along 25A through what was the Gold Coast of the Great Gatsby era. I also showed my kids where the Avianca flight went down in 1990 on the flight path to JFK, which was in Cove Neck on the same peninsula of Oyster Bay.
Wait until construction on house is done, especially if you want pictures of it outside. Orange fence everywhere and you couldn't walk on the grass even. Plus, out in the back guys were trimming trees. We had to walk way down the path to see the front. The outbuildings and windmill are nice though. We will probably go back if they ever get done with the construction.
Easy to get to and reasonable ticket $$. Has just undergone a major renovation to make it even better than previously. Our first visit everything was housed in Son's house, but an excellent video tour and plenty of Roosevelt items to view.
The grounds were interesting and TR's house was very nice. Come back in July of 2015 when the house renovation is complete. Watch Ken Burns PBS special in September to brush up on your Roosevelt family history.
Although the main house was under construction when we visited, it actually gave us the opportunity to go over the grounds- which we wouldn't have done if the house were open. We took our time at the "Old Orchard" estate- the museum which was the home of Theodore Roosevelt Jr and his family. We saw the pet cemetery, the location of the tennis court, and the grandeur of the property, while taking the trails out to the water. We would have missed all this had the house been open. We can't wait to go back next year when the house renovation is complete! If you go for the whole tour in one visit, I would say to allow at least 3 hours to take in all this historic landmark has to offer!
Visited Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay NY in late May. This is one of Teddy Rosevelt's houses. The grounds are nice, but not formal or landscaped. there is a small visitor center that you can spend 10 minutes in and a few out buildings you can look through. However the actual main house was undergoing major construction when we were there. The best we could do was take a walk along the chain link construction fence and look at the work being done - which looked like it will be very grand when it's done. In the mean time not really worth going there unless you just want a nice place to sit on some lawn and have a picnic.
Unfortunately, Sagamore Hill is undergoing repairs now so the house is closed. However, there are extensive grounds to explore and signage that points out what life was like here during Teddy Roosevelt's time. The surrounding estates give one an idea of the exclusive enclave this was during his time (and now) while giving a sense of what formed his character and love of adventure.
If you have not been here, you must come visit! I go to walk my dog on the walking paths in the back of the park. The paths go to the water with a bridge to the beach. My dog learned to swim there, and has made some friends too. Great photo spot for family photo's. The main area, dog's are not allowed. Take a walk around the paths, and see how Theodore Roosevelt and his family use to live. The views are beautiful! And if you have a chance to make it to the many celebrations they have I would recommend it. A walk in history! Great learning experience. I would highly recommend visiting!
Even though the Roosevelt home was still closed for renovations(due to open on July 4 2015 we were told)...there is alot to see and do and learn from, here at Sagamore Hill...it is a lovely 95+ acres; you can hike a nice trail down to the bay; seashells; pretty trees; nice on good weather days.In a home onsite, built by TR's son, there are rooms and rooms full of TR history; artifacts; memorabilia...nice movies get shown regularly telling about TR; his life; his days as governor; Secretary of State; as VP and President. Articles from the home, are also shown now at the museum and will go back into the home once that is opened next year. There is a nice gift shop; there are vending machines nearby too. Good ranger talks each day as well.
If you are a history buff, you will love seeing how Teddy Roosevelt lived. The house and grounds are magnificent. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The walk to the beachfront is somewhat hilly but worth it.
