Really nice outing if you are up in Columbia County. They also have a shop in Hudson over the holidays. Great gifts. Their open hours vary so check the website www.spruceridgefarm.com
I've never been to such a well kept farm. The Alpacas are breathtaking. We got to visit with several litters of piglets, which are endlessly entertaining. It's clear that the owners take great care and pride in how they care for their animals. What was the most wonderful was the hospitality of the owners. They were there to talk to everyone. They were warm and informative. My teenage son and I loved our time there.
Spruce Ridge Farm is a great, free destination for anyone visiting the Hudson Valley: couples, families, photographers. It's a real working farm with a large herd of gorgeous, differently-colored alpacas, all with super-cute faces, names, and personalities. The friendly, knowledgeable staff is happy to show folks around and answer questions. TIP: Check out the farm's website for hours--as they change during the year. (In spring and summer, visit on Saturday afternoons.) While the alpacas are the stars of the show, there are also guinea hens, piglets and cattle to be seen. The shop sells primarily alpaca products--a wide variety of hats, shawls, sweaters, toys and more--including the socks that get many upstaters through the winter. In November and December, the shop is open all weekend for unique Christmas shopping.
Our recent visit to Spruce Ridge Farm was fabulous. When we first arrived, the proprietor greeted us and told us what type of alpacas were in which fields and offered to take us out into the field to see the baby alpaca. After seeing the adults and taking a massive number of photos with the alpaca (and the single llama), we walked into the field with the proprietor, where he fed the baby alpaca and gave us a close up view of the animals, despite their shyness. He was very friendly and knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Be sure to visit the store, as alpaca fiber is extremely soft and you will want to buy something, even if it's only a small stuffed alpaca. Thank you to the owners of the farm, for making our visit so enjoyable!
