walkway over the hudson

Omg I can't say how many times I went here. Every time I have friends over from the city or overseas, I always take them there and they love it. I also bike there a lot usually from Hopewell Junction then back. It's about 30 miles total. They have finished the bike trail to the west too and we went there but it was short.

I have lived in this area all my life and just found out about this walkway. I work alot ok. Well this is my vacation away from home is walking over the Hudson. This place is a bit of history, nature trail and relaxing stroll all rolled up into one. I brought my family and friends to walk over the bridge which is very large mind you. (they drive emergency cars over it) If youre afraid of heights this one you will not know you're on a bridge. The views are amazing. Now there is a glass elevator which brings you to the bottom level to a park which eventually leads to sidewalks into Poughkeepsie. There is a skateboard park there. My daughter rides her bike on the bridge. My son and I have done many walks through the rail trail. My husband and I are thinking about getting bikes and go riding to New Paltz. The black creek was a nice getaway into nature. It would be nice if they had more signs telling about the history of the old railroad and plants are seen along the trail for kids. There is an exercise section on the rail trail that has apparatuses to do situps, pullups, and dfferent exercises. The bridge is an amazing view during the fall season and observing all the changing colors of leaves. The train passes underneath carrying cargo.You can walk to the Poughkeepsie side and have some lunch in the little cafes that are located there. I haven't tried that yet. The best part is that it is completely free. There is a parking lot that charges, but the one down the road is free. There are also vendors at the ends of the bridge selling drinks and food.

The bridge is quite long so people that have problem walking should think about it. It might get windy on the bridge and there are restrooms available on either end of it.

My family and I have been on the Walkway so many times and we still enjoy visiting it. We have been there in all seasons and still find something new to look at and discuss. Seeing how walking is the best known conversation starter, there is always something to talk about while looking at the great views. I especially like autumn days when the weather is cool and the leaves are colorful.On the Poughkeepsie side of the Walkway there is ample off-street parking without meters, some off-street with meters (not usually busy there), and on-street with some restrictions. You will find this on County Route 9G where it is called Parker Avenue, an east-west street. There is also the north-south Route 9G called Washington Street, which the Walkway crosses above, where there some restaurants as well as a stairway to the Walkway. The Parker Avenue access is a mildly sloped gravel parking lot and an asphalt strip. The Walkway is only about 8 blocks from the Metro-North Poughkeepsie Station, if you do not drive!As you travel the approach to the bridge, there are vendors under the trees selling food and trinkets. As you get closer to the bridge, you are higher than the trees and soon the vista widens out and you can see a nice 360 degrees panorama of the river and it's surroundings. The walkway is wide enough to feel uncrowded, but on nice weekends you may experience a few slowpokes, but really, what's the rush?! Stroll and enjoy the sights. While you may be strolling, however, bikes are allowed on the Walkway and they may want to pass you, so stay aware and stay on the right side and all is well.On the Highland side there are bathrooms and some food vendors.You may want to proceed a few minutes longer and leave the path at Rt. 9W, where there is a nice diner called Gateway, and a Burger King, as well as an Italian restaurant all within about 100 yards of each other. I am not too sure about parking on this side since we always park on the Poughkeepsie side, but I imagine there is plenty there as well.When you think about it, you would be hard pressed to think of another attraction like this anywhere near the greater New York Metropolitan area. This is a nice thing for the whole family to enjoy, and for the disabled too, since there are paved access ways on both sides and an elevator may already be available (it has been advertised as coming soon) on the Poughkeepsie side.

It is an amazing place to enjoy outdoors in Poughkeepsie. The Hudson River is beautiful. The historical significance, alone is a draw. The park is well maintained and staffed with workers and volunteers.

The Walkway was a wonderful addition to our area. Better use of the old railway bridge that was an eyesore. Fall is our favorite time on the walkway but with the exception of these bitter cold days, the walk is always enjoyable and affords fantastic views of the Hudson River.

Poughkeepsie and Highland's Walkway Over the Hudson captures a bridge's past as the longest railroad bridge in the world when opened in 1889 and the present as the longest pedestrian bridge in the world. Entrances from both the east and west gates or by elevator from river's edge open the door to wonderful views of the Hudson. A great way to spend part of your time in the historic valley.

I live in the area and honestly didn't understand the excitement and enthusiasm as it was being built and even thought it was a waste of money. After all there is a walking lane on the midhudson bridge ( however you rarely see anyone o. That and you'd be sucking exhaust fumes )! When I finally paid my first visit I realized how wrong I was. It's a beautiful view and a unique experience. The fact that it's connected to the rail trail and you ride your bike there is icing on the cake. It's a grand time and seems like a throw back to when the river was in its hey day go check it out you'll be glad you did!

The Walkway is great and an enjoyable walk in the park. Beautiful views and easy walking in most any weather.

It is unique and a great place to visit. Comes with miles of rail trail on both sides. Particularly picturesque in the fall with all the colors.

Happened to visit in July during the balloon festival. This just added to the magnificent views of the Hudson and Catskill Mountains. You can also bike the entire path east or west of this location.

Fantastic way to see the beautiful Hudson River. If you are in Poughkeepsie area don't miss the views!

The Walkway over the Hudson which links Poughkeepsie and the Town of Lloyd in the beautiful Hudson Valley has the most beautiful Autumn views in New York. The bridge is over a mile long and you can expand your hike, but taking the trail that takes you back to Poughkeepsie on the Mid Hudson bridge ,to 3 miles.

Since its grand opening it has captured the local denizens and visitors with nice views, bike riding, dog walking, strolling, jogging, and the extensive rail trail connections. A genius of an idea that has paid off handsomely for the city of Poughkeepsie.
