I like their sandwiches and fresh produce. Most of the produce is local. I ws only sad it wasn't pen in the winter, but how could it be?
The best local products and an out of this world deli menu. We attend work luncheons, weekend snacks with the little ones and the BEST carrot cake for birthdays. Mmmmmm
The Carrot Barn is a wonderful place to visit!! The produce and goods are of high quality and reasonably priced. We just love it there...we feel right at home and love the wonderful views of the mountains -- the fall colors are just beautiful. It is well worth the trip.
This place has a variety of things to purchase. From fresh fruit & veggies to meat from a local farm, to country nick knacks. The lunch is pretty much order at counter & serve yourself. Very casual & friendly. A nice, quick option for take out or to sit down & chat with a friend. The only negative, is in the summer, there seems to be a strong odor of rotting produce which makes it less appetizing. In the autumn the smell of apple cider donuts fills the air...yum
We love to visit the Carrot Barn at least once a year from the Boston area to stock up on fresh produce. The quality, quantity, and variety, of farm fresh produce here is unsurpassed anywhere in Massachusetts. Ideal growing conditions in the Schoharie Valley produce the finest vegetables in the country. Low prices on bulk quantities make the trip worthwhile. While the Carrot barn is open most of the year, we time our big trip in mid to late September before the first frost when the summer produce is still available and the fall crops are just coming in. We usually head right to the back of the store where produce is sold in full and half bushels at lower prices along with 25 pound bags of field carrots, potatoes in 25 and 50 pound bags, and large bunches of fresh garlic. Don't miss their fresh corn in season, also sold in full bushels. Garlic, winter squash, potatoes, and onions store well in our basement until spring. We also visit several other farm stands in the Middleburg area, which feature different items. As other reviewers have mentioned, the Carrot Barn has a wonderful atmosphere and serves a great lunch in the store from fresh produce and homemade breads.
We had a small family reunion and stopped here for a few hours coffee and food before hand. It was nice. Great vegetables and other country store items. Coffee was good and out for serve yourself. The food-sandwiches, quiche, wraps, etc were excellent-fresh and tasty. It can be slightly pricy but I thought it was well worth the quality.
I live in the valley and for fresh vegetables, plants, flowers, baked goods and sandwiches you couldn't ask for anything better. I love this place and you can smell the freshness from the moment you walk thru the door.
I love having lunch with friends surrounded by flowers, fruit and veggies. The choices are creative and varied, the prices reasonable and the food fresh and prepared with care. The most exciting time to visit is during the asparagus harvest when one can order the fresh asparagus sandwich. But other times of year feature local fresh salads, soups and sandwiches.
I was just there to smell the dirt and feel the warmth of the greenhouse. While there picked up some of the best apple cider donuts ever!
This family run farm has a lot more going on than veggies! Their greenhouses are filled with lush flowers, this time of year mums galore. The cafe has delicious sandwiches and baked goods. A spring favorite is the asparagus muffins- sooo good!! Well worth the visit at any time of year. My only advice is go early to avoid the large crowds on the weekends.
We stopped for lunch on the way to Howe caverns. The kids enjoyed their sandwiches as much as the adults. Fresh ingredient and nice areas to sit in the greenhouse or outside. The highlight was dessert. I had a carrot brownie which was very good. The doughnuts are made in the back and are warm and fresh. Yum. We bought nice fruits and veggies on the way out. Totally casual. Easy, quick and inexpensive. Friendly and helpful. All good. : )
Besides having an impressive assortment of yummy fruits, veggies, and all things country, The Carrot Barn also includes a delightful little deli. They serve delicious food at decent prices and are very fast. When I went I had a yummy turkey sandwich, piled high with veggies, and some of the best french onion soup I've ever had! The next time you're in Schoharie, be sure to check this little gem out. I'm glad I did.
Richard and his family know how to make you feel warm and welcome, stepping into the Carrot Barn is almost like stepping into a story book. Live locally and always enjoy visit, whether fresh fruit, milk, bread, a lunch of soup and sandwich, sooo good cannot do justice with my description.
We stopped in on a whim and were pleasantly surprised. It's a very cute local market with many locally produced products. There's vegetables and a meat counter and a small seating area for eating.
After the terrible damage the whole area received from Hurricane Irene, it was a joy to see the Carrot Barn and the farm resurrected. Wonderful selection of specialty food and gift items and a nice coffee bar/cafe with handmade desserts as well.
