What a treasure we have here in Schroon Lake! Plays, operas, and a nearly 100 year tradition called Vespers performed by talent you'd find on broadway. These talented young performers come together at Seagle Music Colony each summer. With superb direction they perform several plays and operas at a fraction of the cost of most other theaters. This summer we had the pleasure of seeing Camelot & West Side Story, plus Vespers, although the group did other performances as well. The performances were exceptional! Vespers was beautiful! This long time tradition of the group singing primarily religious songs 3 times during the summer at 5:00, called Vespers, is open seating at only the request of a donation. Just lovely! Can't wait for more!
I came to Schroon Lake for the first time this summer to see three shows at the Seagle Music Colony. This program, in its 99th summer season, puts on a combination of operas and musicals each summer. To do that they recruit the most talented young (generally in their 20s) voices from music schools across the country. To be honest, my initial interest was because my son was among the 32 performers invited to Seagle this summer. That said, he was surrounded by extraordinary talents and teachers/directors that assured that each of these performers grows as they provide an amazing opportunity for audiences drawn to the beauty of the Adirondacks.I would highly recommend Seagle programs for visitors to upstate New York!
I had the pleasure of watching 4 Seagle Colony operas during my stay at Schroon Lake. The Seagle Colony is a summer training ground for aspiring opera singers run by Darren Woods, the Artistic Director of the Fort Worth Opera. He's a big time talent, and, boy, does it show in his productions! I was so impressed with these young men and women! They sang and acted their hearts out and performed at surprisingly professional levels, especially considering their relatively young ages. I'm told that the 30 of them work morning to night, 7 days a week, for two months in order to perform 5 productions in 9 weeks. Breathtaking! The costumes, staging, and singing were far above what I expected to see and hear from these relatively young, and very talented singers. Bravi, bravi!
Tonight was opening night of Seagle Music Colony' s 99 season. Camelot was an awesome show! Lead characters were phenomenal with expressions, emotions, singing, remembrance of huge amount of dialog without missing a beat. Thoroughly enjoyed! Can't wait for rest of season performances:) must get tickets early for shows-they do sell out.
With nearly 100 years under its belt, Seagle Music Colony is a gem located in the Adirondack Mountains. The talented students provide song, dance , and musical entertainment without compare in the north country.A treat you can not miss...
The voices they are recruiting are some of the best in the world. This season program is so outstanding we have season tickets. There are operas, musicals and children's programs. The history of the Colony and its beautiful setting makes it a must do when close by.I have been associated with the Seagle Colony for 50 years and the strides it has made in taking music to a whole new level is nothing short of fantastic. If you like trained voices these are the ones you want to hear and see.Just Go!
By far the best music north on NYC . Seagle Music Colony auditions close to 1000 for 32 slots. They have former students in evey major opera company in the United States and many are performing on the European stages. If you want to see the rising stars in Opera and Musical t Theater you need to attend a performance in 2014.
The amount of superb young musical talent here is unmatched. The productions are polished, the performances enthusiastic and energetic, and, up close and personal. If you are ever here in the summer, this is a MUST see!
Tucked away outside Schroon Lake, New York, is a musical gem! The Seagle Music Colony has been providing young opera singers remarkable training and performance opportunities for 98 years. I attended both a dress rehearsal and performance of "Eugene Onegin," sung in Russian, and was blown away by the quality of the singers. The public was welcomed not just for the performances but for the educational activities as well. I attended a masterclass, a mock audition session, and a pre-show lecture by one of the music coaches. If you are anywhere near Schroon Lake in the summertime, don't miss a chance to go to the Seagle Music Colony.
saw Little Women. The director gave his thoughts prior to the show explaining how & why the opera was done in the way it was & how the writing was above on a screen to read & performance was going on- I found both of these were excellent tools in understanding & thoroughly enjoying the evenings performance with magical voices from the students!
Seagle Music Colony has been around for almost 100 years. Each year a couple of dozen young singers come to the colony for an internship. During this time they study with world-class vocal teachers and put on a series of concerts and performances. We saw them perform "Kiss Me Kate," and it was fabulous! The theater is not air-conditioned (not unusual in the mountains) nor is there a sound system. Sometimes the two pianos overpowered the voices, but in general we could hear quite well. The production values were quite good as was the acting. The singing, as you can imagine, was fabulous! If you are spending time in the Adirondacks during the summer and you enjoy theater, Seagle Music Colony should be on your list.
