This is an amazing destination right in the Croton neighborhood. It's like Shangra La...ride up a woody path and voila -- the most amazing sight you will ever see. It should be the 8th world wonder! The adjoining picnic area and playground are added bonuses, but go just for the majestic sight of the rushing dam.

Magical place, in any season! I always take out of town guests to see it, and everyone is always so amazed by the size and beauty.

I used to come here all the time with my parents when I was little! Perfect place to go with the family or a spouse on a nice day

Get outside and explore this amazing dam. You can walk the gravel trail that leads up to the dam and get an up close view looking down into the splash. The road on top is closed allowing you to take in all the scenery of the dam and huge Croton Reservoir. This is a great walk in all seasons but I think winter is my favorite time to go and explore. With snow and ice to frame the view, it's a photographer's paradise. We often walk the trail with our dog, as do other locals. There are some bike riders, but it's mostly a walking trail so it's safer and more relaxing than trying to walk in a busy bike lane. If it's been cold and snowy, the trail can be icy, so you should wear spikes on your boots. There is a parking fee when the park is open in the warmer weather, go early or late in the day for free.

The dam is enormous and very impressive as it was built long ago. My GPS guided us to the south end of the dam, but one can figure out how to drive around to the north where the view is also great. The park and stream are beautiful and easy to access.

I grew up in New York and never knew this sight was in my backyard. Beautiful dam near a lovely park. Nice walking paths. Bring the dogs!

Plenty of parking. Neat & clean park Enjoy walking the Aqueduct trail. BBQ pits available. When the water is flowing it is very cool.

Who would have thought that a dam providing a reservoir for New York City could be a super tourist attraction. Located at a park, this is billed as the third largest, hand made, structure in the WORLD behind the Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China! You have to see this to believe it! As we drove the winding access road down into the valley in front of the dam our eyes bugged out and jaws dropped in near disbelief. Built between 1892 and the turn of the century, it holds tens of billions of gallons of water behind a gigantic structure. Stone masons from Italy were imported to build the massive structure. There is a closed access road at the top where visitors can walk cross the dam and see the immense lake it forms.

If you're in the area, this engineering marvel is worth a visit! Read the history before you go, cell reception is slow and weak there, so you know the history of the structure. It's impressive! There are two places to view the dam; from the walkway along the top of the dam and from the Croton Gorge Park at the base of the dam which has picnic tables, a play ground, etc. The entrance to the top of the dam is nothing more than a short pull off area since the road along the top of the dam is closed. When leaving the park, if you take a right and climb the hill you'll see a small wooden sign on the right and a path where are other cars will probably be parked along the sides. The Croton Gorge Park closes at dusk, but just before it closes is the perfect time to see the gorgeous view!

Great Pyramid of Giza, Great Wall of China, Croton Dam. These are the great hand hewn structures of the world. But the last is a bullet train from NYC, just outside of the Village of Croton. There is a public park at the base and a bridge over the top that offers hikers a glorious view of the reservoir on one side and the falls into the Croton River on the other. Catch it anytime but I like the fall when the trees are red and orange.

My husband & I visited recently. It was truly beautiful. Our only problem was that we couldn't find the trail at first - no markers, but we saw someone come out behind some trees and problem solved. Park by the playground and head to the picnic tables on your left. Look for trail in the woods in front of you.

My husband and I enjoyed this place very much. It's a amazing sight. If you go further up the road from the gorge entrance, park your car and walk to the bridge, the sight is breath taking. We went during sunset, it was very beautiful. Be careful however leaving, people tend to not drive safely down then hill and like to go as fast as possible on blind corners.

Water rushes over the dam, forming a spillway that resembles a waterfall. The sound is pleasing, and on a sunny day you will almost certainly see a rainbow effect. There is a large parking lot (ugly) with picnic tables, but the view of the surrounding trees and distant hills is lovely. There are some grassy areas to lie on, and I often see people with grills cooking. The approach from Route 129 is not very easy to find, and the road leading in is very narrow, so it can be hard to pass other cars. I live so close by that I've taken the place for granted. For this review, I googled it and found out lots of things I didn't know. Make sure to look for the “New Croton Dam” in Croton-on-Hudson. The references to the Old Croton Dam are about the history, and there are other Croton Dams outside Westchester County.

How did I not know this existed before? it is one of the coolest dams I have ever seen. the magnitude of it is hard to fathom until you stand next to it. And the innovative design of it...mixing the man made with the natural...it is really a sight to see.

Was a cool October day, windy, but sunny, decided to take a drive to Croton on the Hudson, to see the Dam. Not far from the NYC area, about 40 min drive. Once there, you can park below in the park or start up top, where there is a walkway, just a short walk away. The Croton River, is surrounded by lovely Mountains and trees, especially now in Autumn, the Fall colors and the hand made Dam, made for some super photos! The Dam cascades into a waterfall, and a running stream, really nice. The park has some picnic tables and open areas, parking lot, and great views of the waterfall. Is a great place to take photos, and relax.
