Fun tour of the grounds with a very informative guide!! What a beautiful piece of history in the Cooperstown area. The house itself is huge and worth exploring! The grounds were gorgeous and made for the perfect fall family excursion.
We went Oct 25th 2014 at 7:30pm for a candlelight tour. Interesting stories of the home its builder the ongoing renovations and the "things" that have occurred there. Not your typical bad things happened here place but odd feelings sightings and orbs in pictures including ours. Must see in Cooperstown area even if you prefer the daylight tours.
Although we did not get to meet John, or the cat, we still enjoyed our tour very much. Our guide told us many fascinating tidbits of information about the history of the house and the different generations of family that lived there. Would like to visit every so often just to check out the progress of the renovations. My only tip is to wear a coat if it's cold outside! The dedication of the staff to preserving the house and the history that goes with it is very admirable.
A nice tour, house is quite extensive. A work in progress, several nicely decorated rooms. Had been on the fence about stopping was glad I did. Did while partner was at Baseball Hall of Fame, about a 15 minute drive, worked out near perfectly.
We wanted to see what Hyde Hall looked like. We surely will return to tour this wonderful stately mansion. Due to time restraints we could not do it this trip. Amazing view of the lake and Glimmerglass State Park.
We just wanted to get a glimpse of Hyde Hall, but thanks to a wonderful gentleman named John we were able to take a tour. We even got to meet George Clark the cat! It's wonderful to see how much they've all done to restore the mansion to its glory. And, to learn about how they've restored and what they are still working on. Congrats to all the volunteers for bringing such a beautiful home with such rich history back to life! I hope to visit again during their Halloween happenings.
Hyde Hall is becoming an attraction in itself in the Cooperstown area. Our expert guide, John, a Brit from Cheshire, knows how to handle an outstanding tour. He made the history and restoration of the house more interesting by telling stories, rather than burdening tourists with excessive amounts of boring minutiae. The tour connects family members with major moments in history. My husband, who is an extreme baseball fan, went with me to Hyde Hall and was WOWed by the tour.
We stumbled into Hyde Hall on a momentary whim during a recent trip to upstate NY. What a place! This location is well worth the effort. A very interesting tour was given by a guide who's part of a staff of people who are part of the ongoing preservation of Hyde Hall. It's not only a view of how 'the other half' lived at one time - there's the connection that the family who owned Hyde Hall for generations had to the beginnings of this country. Stopping here really made our day.Tom and Hatsy M.
When your in Cooperstown visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame, go to the other end of Lake Otsego and visit Hyde Hall. A little gem of a mansion that's being restored to it's original beauty. Take the tour and ask for John, a wonderful Englishman, who doesn't hold a grudge about loosing the war, and knows all there is to know about Hyde Hall. The views are sensational. John Smart.
If you've read my other reviews, we visited here on the same family trip. And again, this was something my granddaughter suggested. Tour guide was interesting; renovations were in progress. Would definitely recommend!
Two years ago, we went on the ghost walk, vignettes of people involved in the history of the home and thought then it was worth the trip back to see in the daylight. Last week we finally got back for a daytime tour. If you love history, this place brings it to life. You can almost hear the children laughing or see the servants filling the wood box, or the the master of the house in his office collecting rent from the tenant farmers. Plus the area is naturally beautiful, Glimmerglass State Park, Otsego Lake, and Cooperstown.
We attended the evening candlelit guided tour last fall after Hyde Hall was featured on the SyFy investigative series Ghost Hunters in 2013. Although nothing unusual happened during our guided tour it was a fun way to see the inside of Hyde Hall and imagine what it may have been like for those who lived there. If you like old homes and history, it's worth a visit.
I had read about Hyde Hall on TripAdvisor when planning our trip but did not realize that it is part of Glimmerglass State Park. while visiting the park we saw it on the map the park attendant gave us and when we were walking on the beach, realized that it was just a short walk up the hill so we decided to explore. You can take a guided tour of the inside for $10 but we decided to just walk around the outside. There is enough signage to get a good overview of the site. The view of Otsego Lake from the Hall is gorgeous and it's easy to see why the Clarke family decided to build this beautiful neoclassical country mansion here in the early 1800's. In addition to the Hall there is also a barn, carriage house and stables, dog kennel, gate house and caretaker's cottage. If you are visiting Glimmerglass State Park make sure to take a look or the Hall can be accessed without going through the park.
We so enjoyed our visit on a gorgeous July afternoon ~ breath-taking views of Otsego Lake! So much information to take in ~ Titanic section was most interesting! Pam, our tour guide, was outstanding and a wealth of knowledge ~ I'm sure all the guides are exceptional, as she was, which really makes a difference! Can't believe I've lived in the area 50+ years and have never visited, shame on me! I will be recommending this hidden gem to everyone ~~ Loved, loved, loved it! Ironic that over the last 2 weeks I've watched every episode of "Downton Abbey" and then to make this visit was so intriguing to me!Hope to attend other events that will be held here ~ Thanks, Pam!!!
I stopped at Hyde Hall with my girlfriend. We had done tours of a few other mansions and old homes before. This was very different. Usually you see the renovated homes, this one is in the process of being renovated. You see some rooms already updated and you also see a few rooms being fixed up. The view from the top floor and the grounds are amazing. A few other reviewers mentioned the tour guide and they are right-he is great and makes the trip well worth it.
