It a wonderful place to visit while in Augusta, you could walk and see a few monuments or just enjoy a quiet moment.
This park is a lovely place to come for a picnic, a walk, a jog, a game of whiffleball or to lie on the grass and read a book. There are old shade trees and gravel paths and a Viet Nam Memorial. It sits under the imposing State Capital building up on the hill.
Capitol Park...wasn't it designed by Frederick Law Olmstead or some famous genius of outdoor engineering? Something in this vicinity was... However, when you're there, you're bound only to get a view of the imposing and not-so-nice State Capitol Complex. Maine...it isn't that great! Nasty un-Constitutional laws still permit the Powers-That-Be to lock one in a mental facility for no reason...and with no access to the courts. All True. The UN has banned the sort of abuse conducted at Riverview/AMHI (a psychiatric, er..."hospital") and even the Feds cut $20 million from the Riverview budget. However, Riverview lives on via State money (is that legal? No, not legal, in fact...however, Maine considers itself beyond the purview of the U.S. Constitution, which is part of the problem with Capitol Park. Who cares about Capitol Park and its view of the Capitol when the State featured is taking page after page out of the crypto-fascist playbook. boo hiss. Thumbs down).
Capitol Park, as it's name suggests in located across from the state Capitol building. It's a wonderful location to have a picnic and there are walking paths all around it to stretch your legs. It's also near the Maine State Museum and the Kennebec River Rail Trail.
I lived on Center Street about a 1 to 2 minute walk away. I always played there as a kid. Alot of people seemed to use it back in the day, but no one really knows it is there. Much is unchanged since my childhood days. They have added a few nice benches and a couple graveled paths, but not little else. They old Governor's monument has a new decorative fence around it, that seems out of place, but it was a nice thought. I read about and have seen pictures of the two big carriage roads that went down the middle of the park, how nive it would be to see them again, and perhaps offer carriage rides during the Fourth of July celebration! I would suggest adding those roads in again, perhaps a water fountain, some better walking paths with lighting for night time walks (the Police station now sits next to the park in the old Naval Reserve building, so security would be good. A new set of real stairs,to replace the railroad ties (dangerous now) behind the Governor's monument.More flowers definately would make it more pleasing to the eyes as well! I know it is a State park and times have changed, but it could definately use more attention to details. I must say it is a great space to have families visit and relax, just needs something more.
Lots of space to play ball with the family, have a picnic or a family party. Well maintained, easily accessible. Right across from the YMCA and the police station.
Dog friendly and great view of the capital bulding. I met another pet owner who refered me to a great local pet store just up the road!
Regular visitor as I'm often in the area. Would like to see more welcoming paths and directions to out-of-town folks and more flowers, especially visible from Capitol and State Streets.
After touring the Maine State House and State Museum, we walked down the street to view the front of the governor's mansion (not open that day), and then we walked across the street to the capitol park. We were interested to see the Vietnam Memorial which was different from any that we have seen. The location was also a great vantage point for photos of the state house.
Captiol Park isn't unattractive; there just isn't much there. There is a metal sculpture in honor of Vietnam veterans, and an early grave monument, but otherwise is almost completely empty. There are some nice old trees, but there really aren't many flowers or ornamental plantings there. There are occasionally events such as a children's celebration in the park, but it's remarkable how little is there or goes on there. What's markedly more interesting is the nearby Kennebec Valley Rail Trail. Captiol Park is okay for a short walk or a picnic lunch, but there's just not much there to attract visitors from much of a distance.
