My husband and I had a great time taking this tour of Wood Island Light. A beautiful lighthouse on an island off Biddeford Pool, Maine, it's worth going to see. You take a small boat to the lighthouse, which is probably less than 10 min to get there. Wear hiking shoes to prevent any skidding. You will be walking on a boardwalk for about 1/2 mile to the light, but it's mostly flat, a few inclines but nothing like Seguin if you are familiar with that one, which is straight up.The tour guide was helpful and we got a ton of photos.Be advised that they will ask for a donation at the end of the trip and they will pass the hat around. They suggested a hefty amount for the donation but we were only able to give $10 and you shouldn't feel pressured to give more than you can. We weren't pressured, but we gave what we could afford. It's worth the walk to see it. A fun trip.Afterward, see my other review-- don't bother going to Goldthwaite's to eat unless you want an awful lunch and the possibility of feeling sick afterwards. My suggestion -- take photos of Biddeford Pool and then find another town for lunch.

I would recommend doing the actual tour by boat to the lighthouse, we didn't have time so we parked at the Bird Sanctuary and walked out to the point for the best view from land. Parking is VERY scarce. Only room for barely 3 cars. Highly recommend zoom lens and/or binoculars. I had neither with me that day. oops. So my photos are with an iphone 5s from land. One without any zoom and one with maximum zoom. But it's a nice walk and very quiet and peaceful late in the day. Just an FYI, no restaurants or bathrooms at the bird sanctuary.

what a terrific trip well worth the suggested $15.00 donation! the volunteers have great pride and a great deal of knowledge that makes a scenic trip a pleasant educational experience.I would suggest that if you're inclined you might want to bring over a small lunch or snack to have while on the island as there is free time to explore before or after you scale the lighthouse stairs. Water is available for a donation on the island. While the website does mention walking, i'm not sure that i expected the length of the walk from the landing area to the light house. While is is a lovely level walkway, someone with limited stamina and/or mobility might not find it enjoyable or manageable.

Restored to its original splendor, the lighthouse is lovely, with boats passing by every few minutes. Great photography op, especially in the early morning. Perfect spot for lighthouse lovers and not widely known so not a lot of tourists around.

My husband and I booked a tour over the Internet to see Wood Island Lighthouse. They work off of donations, but suggest at least $15 per person. Their boat picked us up at Vines Landing in Biddeford Pool and taxied us over to the island. They have built a wooden walkway from the boat ramp all the way to the lighthouse. It is about a 1/2 mile walk, but it is an easy walk on level land, no hills, but they require that you wear tennis shoes and sign a waiver. Our tour had two tour guides, one stayed outside or in the house talking about the history, while the other escorted 6 at a time up inside the light. There are 60 steps up to the top, and the stairs are very narrow and steep. I am not in the best of shape, but had no problems. And what a sight to see! Definetly worth seeing if you like history and/or lighthouses. Our boat driver took us back around the island for an ocean view of the lighthouse, giving us a chance to photograph from the water. It was a great trip and highly recommended. The total trip was about two hours.
