We really enjoyed exploring very bit of this Fort Knox as we walked around this fort dripping with history from years gone by. We started outside looking at the walls and watched a man who was re-pointing and told us it was a never ending job because as soon as he got to the end it was time to start again, but he added that it was such a lovely way to earn a living by preserving this great fort for years to come. It was all decorated ready for a big Halloween party that was due to run at weekends until 31st Oct as we soon realised that Halloween in America is a much bigger deal than we make it in the UK. There were three gun batteries A,B & C which we decided to do after the main fort. We started at the bottom going from room to room until we had finished, we discovered big black cannons and cannon balls as well as being able to see where others had stood and could imagine the soldiers standing there in the cold on guard duty. We then visited the living quarters, mess room and kitchens etc. we found a dark passage than went underground and traveled from one side to the other underneath the living quarters so could only think this was an escape route if they were ever invaded? We continued onto the top level where the battlements were and it was easy to see why this fort had been built here as it was possible to see all around so avoid a surprise attack by just keeping watch over the river and the land.Well there you have it a short description of what to find at Fort Knox so if like us you like to see how the military defended your country in years gone by we recommend like us you visit this fort. Thank you for reading John & Sue Eastbourne UK.

My best friend who lives near Fort Knox took me and my three boys there for the day. What a wonderful time it was! Lots of exploring, climbing, and walking...dark passageways, some leading to light and freedom...others leading to water views...some dead ends...old prisoner cells...hills and beautiful views. I cannot remember what the fees were, but obviously, they were quite reasonable. Nice spacious parking lot and some picnic tables near the shade trees, if you bring a picnic lunch. The makings are there for a great family experience. There are brochures explaining the historical significance of the fort...which really helps as you make your way through the maze of rooms, passageways, and the outside grounds. Lots of fabulous photo ops...of the scenery as well as of your family...inside the fort and outside too. There is a lot to see and do for all ages in this region of Maine, but try not to miss Fort Knox...it is a unique Maine historical sight and a fun time is guaranteed for everyone and for all ages. Be sure, though, to wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes or you might be at a disadvantage.

We loved our visit here, and wish we'd set aside more time for it! Go if you get a chance- everything is very well-kept and educational/informative. You don't have to be guided, so you can take your time exploring all the rooms, side rooms, levels, hideaways, and architecture of this amazing fort!

This was a "stop in" because it looked interesting- well worth the visit. There are a lot of dark corridors, so bring a flashlight. The employees there were very informative and answered our questions, adding little stories, etc. We enjoyed a couple of hours of history on our ride through Maine in this well kept attraction.

I love Maine! The first time I went here, my dad brought my son and I and wow! What a great day out! It was so cool just to explore this massive historical site! You need at least several or more hours to walk through this giant maze of corridors and old command posts and sleeping quarters! The old cannons are something to see. Just a great day out full of interesting history!

Tripped across this place by accident when we stopped to admire the bridge. The old fort was all done up for Halloween so was extra spooky. It's really well preserved and is similar to some of the sea forts from Napoleonic wars I've seen in the UK.

This is an inexpensive way to spend a couple of hours. We first went to the tower and up onto the observation deck. There are great 360 degree views and on a good day you can see for miles and it gives a good full view of the fort from height. The fort itself is quite interesting, the usual star shape, not as big as Halifax or Quebec. You can wander about to your heart's content with plenty to see inside and out. It is one of the few forts that never received it's full armament, so was never fully functional. If you want to wander around inside especially in the infantry fire-ports or down the stairs to the lower battery you really do need a torch as in places it is pitch black. Not the easiest place to get around if you have mobility problems.

We started our visit by a trip up the tower. The views were wonderful and we could see the Osprey nest. I do miss the old bridge, however, this was a great addition. We then went to the Fort. Great views and lots of interesting things. I liked the officer's room that had period furnishings. We there on a nice day. Lots of walking outdoors, so probably not a rainy day activity.

The observatory and fort were very neat. The fort was not super exciting if you have ever been to a very large fort. The observatory was unique and offered great views. This is a neat attraction if you are passing by.

Let me start by saying for the love of God thank goodness we did not have to travel over the Penobscot Narrows Bridge to get to Fort Knox otherwise I would not be writing this review! With that said this was a pretty cool historical site. History is not "my thing" but my 14 year old son loves it. It is laid out well with adequate information to give you an idea of what was what back in the day. As we stood in front of the Penobscot River it was easy to envision the trials and tribulations those that were there experienced, at least to some capacity. If you have the time I would suggest making a stop by. Also right next to that bridge there is a little parking lot that gives some great info about it.

Great restoration! Also went up to the tower on the suspension bridge. Amazing view, the price was so low to do both things. I am recommending this to all my Canadian friends!

We decided to check out this fort on the way to Arcadia. Although nothing much historical ever took place here it is still worth exploring and taking in the amazing views.

You can spend more time here than you originally think. What an impressive structure with great views of the Penobscot Bridge and Bucksport. Amazing to see what a fortress this is!
