Smalls Falls is a beautiful picnic area with plenty of trails that snake around the different streams and falls. We drove about 12 miles south of downtown Rangeley on Rt. 4. You'll see a Picnic Area sign. The main entrance was closed for the season but there is enough room to park along Rt. 4 at the entrance. We walked through the picnic area and immediately saw the falls from the footbridge. You can walk along the left side of the falls and even walk out onto the rocks a bit higher up. Plenty of photo opportunities. You can also continue along other trails to find another stream and falls. There are some high cliffs in spots so be careful with small kids or dogs. We visited during the last week in October so it was a bit cool and very quiet. We only saw two other groups of people in the distance. I imagine that it is much busier in the summertime. It would be fun to play in the water along the falls in nice weather. A great place to visit if you're in the area.
Smalls Falls is a beautiful place to hike around, take some pretty photos and have a picnic. Make sure you wear some good hiking shoes/boots so that you can get close to the falls. Easy access down some steps and across a bridge.
We did walk down to look up to the falls. It is really breath taking. You can walk further and look from above. Planning to bring a picnic lunch next time.
Convenient place for a picnic and road break. The sound of the stream flowing over the rocks is relaxing and woodlands are refreshing.
A couple minute walk from the parking lot to the walkway where you can see the waterfall. Beautiful area! Worth the stop, has a place to get your feet wet. Restroom facilities available.
Worth the hike! Not to far ...slight climb...chain link fence to hold on to if needed. Good photo opportunity to get some nice shots without being crowded.
Easy to get back to the falls. Great swimming and fun for the family and certainly worth the effort. Would stop again.
The view at Smalls falls was so breathtaking I was awed by it.Can't miss seeing this.It is a must see and take and don't forget your cameras. Thanks Anne
Smalls Falls is definitely a "must-do" while in the Rangeley area! Easy to find off Route 4 south of Rangeley. There is a great bridge to stand on and view 1 of the 2 falls. One adult was jumping off the ledges into the water; a bit scary to watch (and not recommended). There is a dirt path and fence/railing to hold onto while walking up the side of the falls where you can stop in numerous places to see the various waterfall pools along the way. Plenty of places to sit and enjoy the views. There is a nice pool at the top of the larger falls where you could wade or swim though you'd have to be extremely careful that you not let yourself be drawn towards the falls! There is another set of falls/swimming pool areas through the nice forest area within a few minutes walk of the major falls. Great swimming hole here as well (a few people were jumping off this area too… but again, extreme caution has to be used so that you don't hit the rocks… definitely not a place for young children to jump but if with adults, they could walk down the hill/slopes to a small swimming hole or two for some fun. A beautiful area to relax and enjoy!!! A definite "must see" for the Rangeley Area.
We have been coming here for years. Scenery is amazing all over the area. Lots of great swimming spots and even a few places you can slide down the rocks. Always be careful however as the rocks are sometimes slippery. Restrooms and BBQ available to allow for a perfect day of food and fun
there are a bunch of little spots to explore, wade/soak in the water, or jump off a cliff into the water below. Great waterfalls. Many spots for fishing and picnicing, just starting wandering around!
Beautiful and picturesque. Take your time to explore and listen to the water happily bouncing off rocks and drops.
This was a relatively easy hike and the view was outstanding of the falls from all points. Right after leaf season, so they say, but the color was still vibrant.
So very worth the short hike to the top and around the area... The scenery was outstanding! A great place to get a few super pictures... Loved the peaceful spot around the top!
We went Columbus day weekend and the bathrooms were locked up for the season which is too bad as there were lots of people here. The falls and the colors were wonderful.
