Very interesting and well maintained. One of my favorite places in Hardin Co. I would love to bring out of town guests here.
The museum is full of Hardin County history from Indians to today. The building itself has a story to be told. Come visit and spend a short while in the past of Hardin County!
This little museum is a big surprise. It is very impressive for a small building in a small city. Everything is well organized and set up to keep your interest. The staff is so helpful and anxious to help! Be sure & check out the "Country store" display.
There is so much history and dates back many years. It is of Hardin co. and other counties; plus many items from other places. A lot of pictures and other historical items dating back to Civil war days and maybe some earlier.
I wasn't sure if I should rate this museum, because I was only there for seven minutes. (When I got to Kentucky, I changed the time on the clock in my car, but not on my watch. Oops!) I decided to leave a review anyway, because I loved what I was able to see in just seven minutes. The general store was cool, and I got to see some interesting displays. I would very much like to go back.
Had a chance to visit the museum and get a tour by Elvin Smith Jr - resident Hardin Co historian It was great - i learned so much. I have been to the Oldest House Museum iin St. Augustine Fl before and the Hardin County History Museum put that one to shame. The displays were great - enhanced by linking history to modern culture, and was very thorough in the information. Lots of unknown weird stories too. Go there!
Brought the kids here from Ft Knox, to learn more about the local area. My 5 year old loved the general store exhibit and the log cabin replica. Great info about Abe Lincoln in the back. James, the museum volunteer, is a retired teacher and docents on Friday. He was very informative and helpful, and great asset to the overall experience! Would take guests here while in town. Dined at Cobbler's Cafe a short walk away and made for a wonderful overall outing.
My visit was preceded by over an hour in 100 degree heat and was less attentive than usual. Wish I could return and read all that was available. Probably could spend three hours or more if everything was read. Since town dates from pre-revolution Indian days, and Lincloln's father lived there, other notables, civil war battle, confederates and more up through the present day. I would recommend to any visitor that likes history.
This has to be one of the best "small town" museums I've ever visited. Professional looking and very interesting displays, very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff, a large selection of historic books to purchase, and a great genealogy room.
The Hardin County History Museum, in a old great building on Main Street next to the old State Theatre, was a pretty cool little museum. It started out with a big collection of arrowheads, and Indian tools and artifacts! There was an old log cabin set up, as well as displays on military and architectural history of the area. My favorite part of the front portion of the museum was the new general store display! There is an old façade of a general store, and you can open the creaky screen door and go in and find tons of vintage merchandise on the shelves, along with an old cash register. I really liked that display!! At the back of the museum is the Lincoln display – which is huge, for the overall size of the museum! There were some written displays with interesting information and a few really cool museum pieces including the original door from Lincoln’s birthplace cabin, some correspondences with Joshua Speed bringing me back to Farmington I visited yesterday, and a pair of slave shackles from 1850s Zaire (Congo)! I saw and watched some of the movie ‘I Too Am A Kentuckian’ that was set up in the corner. It had a lot of information but was centered around historical records and while I do think that’s interesting, I have to admit my attention span was not as long as the movie so I opted to walk around and read some of the displays rather than sitting still at the movie. Its worth coming to old Main Street in Elizabethtown to visit this great small town museum!
