We decided to drive to Yellowtail Dam for a swim after a long day traveling and visiting Little Bighorn Battlefield monument and were so glad we did! It is about an hour drive off the beaten path but it was worth the drive for the beautiful scenery and a refreshing swim! You have to drive about 10 miles from the dam to get to the marina and swim area. We wished we would have had at least a half day there to rent a boat and go down the Bighorn Canyon river!
the drive to reservoir was nice..... the best vie would be from a boat traveling up the river ...... but the video at the dam site is nice to watch the overview of the river is nice to see
A very special place, and if you are a visitor with no boat, rent one! We camp at Black Canyon and consider it a privilege to live here and go there as much as we can in the summer!
Probably one of the most beautiful lakes in the country winding thruthe bighorn mountains 75 miles thru a canyon and undeveloped Available only by boat at each end of the lake.
This isn't exactly a wilderness experience, but the view down over the reservoir is pretty exciting. Best seen by boat.
The scenery is pretty, but not a lot of information is available at the site. There was a staff person, but no park ranger on a Saturday. The exhibits at the center are interactive, but more like buttons that light up and explain. It's a long drive. Unless you like to fish not a great location. We wanted to take a boat ride, but you need to approach the park from Wyoming - over an hour away - to take the boat ride. It's a long drive.
The campgrounds need to be looked at and some updates need to be made. The restroom was the worst smelling area I have ever been around and I have been some rotten places, the person watching the grounds was becoming more aggressive than needed, to the point of harrassment, and it was next to immpossible to set a tent up. Otherwise, it was a very beautiful place to be.
we love yellowtail...it's beautiful, and scenic. the only problem with the area is garbage disposal. over the last couple years, all of the garbage cans have been removed from the recreation area...that means camp grounds, bathrooms, etc...if you are camping, you have NO PLACE to put your garbage. And this is bear country! Even if you are not camping, at the end of your boating day the bathrooms are DISGUSTING because of lack of garbage disposal sites. This has only been in the last couple of years.... someone with no clue has taken over and changed everything...other than that the area itself is beyond beautiful.
Picnic places abound, moderate dining/convenience store, with good food, and a place to swim (hard to find in reservoirs any more). Large concrete boat ramp so there is little wait time, and on a hot summer day it is very cool by or on the water. Ample room to open up the throttle (check regulations).
This is a great boating lake. We rented a pontoon to see the lake. We spent the day swimming and enjoying the views. The scenery is unbelievable. This is a man-made lake which is amazing. You can waterski and swim at this lake. They do have a very nice swimming area that has a lifeguard. Even when the parking lot is busy there is still plenty of room to get away from all the people.
