Nothing is more truly western than a vigilante story of hangings and the cemetary to go with! Boot Hill delivers! My kids love it. The cemetary LOOKS old because it IS old and while I would not say that picture taking is necessarily appropriate, it is a great adventure!
Not a lot there other than grave markers and an informational market. However, the drive's probably worth it, as it's the apex of the area, giving folks the best view in town.
My wife and I visited here whilst traveling through the area on a roadtrip and I must say it is a particularly interesting and nice to visit. The area is steeped in history so we decided to take a escorted trip on a bus around the town and up to boot hill. It's actually quite touching when you see the graves, thoroughly recommend but not just as good as the boot hill at tombstone in Arizona.
- The Montana Vigilantes hanged five road agents and then buried them here. There is even a model of the hanging day (Jan 14, 1864) and procedure in town, a place called “Hanging Museum”. The views surround Boothill are worth visiting it. I did not find anything interesting in the adjacent “newer” cemetery.
A little more information regarding the backstory would have been nice. The original graves in the area were relocated to remove them from close proximity to the road agents.
Its a nice short drive to the top of the hill to see the grave site of the local outlaws of the past.
You can almost imagine yourself being here when they laid to rest five of the plummer gang(out law gang) after they were hanged nearby and you have a great view of Virginia City which is a must visit place.
Lovely morning bicycle ride to Boot Hill which had good views of the town. Regular cemetery is more interesting.
Boot Hill has four outlaw graves and a couple of other ones. Most of the people in town were buried in he other cemetery because they didn't want to be near the outlaws. Great view of the town and surrounding area since it is on a hill overlooking Virginia City.
This is the gravesite for several robbers and highwaymen who were apprehended and sometimes hanged in Virginia City and Nevada City
Interesting site, but not sure why grave sites of the hanged were later marked, and then decorated with flowers. Boot Hill gives some great Montana History and a nice view of Virginia City and surrounding areas.
A quick drive up Boot Hill is a great way to cap your visit to Virginia City. Markers that have been placed for some of the City's notorious 'ne'er do well' bad guys from the past make a fun photo-op for kids. Fourth of July fireworks are launched from the hill and it's a fantastic show from the town below! An afternoon is than enough time to budget to see Virginia City, unless you plan to see a show such as the "Brewery Follies" (which is rated for adults - and they mean it!). The nearby town of Ennis (about 12 miles) has accommodations and services.
This is it, the most fabulous final resting ground five outlaws have ever seen! The hill itself overlooks the town of Virginia City and provides spectacular views that on a clear day can take you all the way to Yellowstone Park! It's really a western town so rich in history you will be astonished. Outlaw Sheriff Henry Plummer robbed the locals until he and his gang were stopped by the 'Vigilantes of Montana'..... this is where some of them ended up! This is the place where they had to dig up one of the outlaws, find his 'club' foot so they could figure out what order they were buried in, then they put the foot in the local museum and you can still see it there today! Ride the old firetruck up the hill for a great tour, or take your car and stop off at the local cemetary on the way. This 'living ghost town' (lots of people still live here!) is worth a visit for sure, stay over night, see one of the shows in the towns two theatres, eat great food, ride a stagecoach, visit the famous candy store and settle into the only exisiting fully intact 1860's western mining town in America today!
Ein Besuch des Boot Hill lohnt sich in jedem Fall, Sehr schöne alte Monumente.Ein Abstecher lohnt sich auf jeden Fall.
