Stayed for the weekend dec 2014. 2 BR cabin was exactly as expected and similar to other WV state park cabins. Kitchen was adequately supplied. Park amenities were not important to us as our purpose was serenity, plenty of firewood, and grilled ribs. The office staff were friendly and helpful although we are quite self sufficient. I needed very late Fri night checkin and staff made accommodations for us. Lots of trails, nice playground, and in season a pool. The price for off season was great. The ambiance was perfect. Bring your food, drinks, spices, and condiments. Beds, kitchen, towels, grill, deck, and lots of firewood provided. If you need room service or 24 hr concierge this is not the place for you. If quiet self sufficiency is your goal Lost River is a great option.

Trails are well marked and the staff is very helpful. We wanted a hike that was about an hour long and a bit challenging. The park rangers gave a good suggestion. Unfortunately the trees blocked what is probably a beautiful view when the leaves are gone. Talked to someone who took the trail ride but the weather also prevented them from seeing the view. I would suggest to visit on a clear day.

This state park, roughly 135 miles from Washington, DC, is tucked away in a rural corner of the West Virginia mountains. The cabins are well-equipped, that includes cable TV, and are far enough away from each other to give one that feeling of openness. The park has a swimming pool, tennis courts, a fitness trail and horseback riding all in addition to miles of hiking trails. The park is also pet-friendly, which is a plus. Visitors should be aware that stores and restaurants are at least 20 miles away from the park. Before visitors leave home, it would be a good idea to make doubly sure they've brought everything they think they'll need, otherwise it's a long trip to the store. This is a great get-away for a relaxing week.

The view at the top is really beautiful. About 1.5 hours to the top, at normal pace. 45 minutes down.

This park is beautiful, but for the most part mediocre except for one thing: Cranny Crowe overlook. Its a semi strenuous hike up to the overlook but omce there there are really nice views and a shielded place to sit. My feeling is that hiking in the winter is great, but the fall is the best, with splashes of color everywhere.

Peaceful, well-maintained, plenty of space for everyone! Hiking trails for those on foot, bridle trails for those with four feet, swimming pool in season, and nicely appointed rentable cabins.

This park is just okay in comparison with other WVA parks we have visited. I suppose it's okay for a family outing on a weekend. We are medium to high difficulty hikers, however, and this park was a disappointment in that sense. Trails were somewhat ill kept, some not kept at all, and markings were frequently unclear. The staff at the front desk suggested a MTB path, but it was not navigable on foot really. We did get our share of excitement when we came across a real rattle snake and saw a copperhead from a distance. The park is also rather small and lacks the drama of other WVA parks -- no water, no lakes, no dramatic elevations. That said, the park is removed from civilization, so to speak, in that the nearest larger town (with something other than gas station and post office, etc) is about 12 miles down from the park. For those seeking refuge from the madness of the city, this is an okay place to visit.

Staff were with good humor, helpful and polite. They pointed out local places to eat as no lodge in the park. The pool is beautiful and clean. The trails were well maintained. The cabins were private and clean. The GPS didn't find the park well so take note and follow a MAP. West Virginia has a truly beautiful park system and this is a rare, hidden gem.

Great scenery and hiking, but they really need better maps! Not very crowded and a pool is a great find! We climbed to the top of the mountain (about 2,5 hours round trip), it's a medium difficulty trail, but you can also take a horseback ride (2 hours roundtrip).

Check out those hills you drive through on your way into the park, because if you plan on hiking, that's what your terrain is going to be. This park boasts many hiking trails of varying lengths-- most are on the shorter side because there are significant hills involved. Park also has picnic areas, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball court, playground, and pool. Park also has very clean bathroom facilities (though not a lot of them).
