The bridge is in town (right next to Sheets if you need gas or snack) and next to the museum (limited hours). Vietnam Memorial Park adjacent to the bridge gives you a great vantage point for pictures.
I never tire of driving through the Philippi covered bridge. I remember going through the original bridge until my adulthood. I was horrified and so saddened when it caught on fire and was destroyed. However, just as our wonderful West Virginia was born from the division of our state in the Civil War, the bridge was lovingly restored and reneged to its former glory. It is definitely worth the stop at the road side lot to take photographs.
The drive to the small town of Philippi is very pretty in the fall. The covered bridge is located in town and traffic flows thru it even today. Kind of cool to check out if you are near the area.
Stopped by the covered bridge in Philippi today and learned quite a bit of history. Longest covered bridge in West Virginia, the only covered bridge in the US in use and as part of a state highway. The area is a beautiful slice of the state. Enjoyed the historical information posted, the flags, the beautiful river. Glad we made the effort to see the bridge and the town.
Very pretty setting in small town was filled with unexacting amount of history. Even had small waterfall nearby!!
This is the longest covered bridge in West Virginia, and is a source of local pride. The bridge was used on 3 June 1861 by both Union and Confederate troops after the Battle of Philippi Races, by some reckonings the first land battle of the American Civil War. The bridge was the first to be captured in the war by either side and was used for a time as a barracks by the victorious Union troops. In 1861, Philippi was part of Virginia, and it was not until June 1863 that West Virginia became a state. My relatives were both Union and Confederate soldiers and officers.
This wasn't the most attractive covered bridge I've ever seen, but it was only a small detour off of our route. It was interesting to read the signposts about the Civil War battle fought at that location. Worth a stop, but not a destination by itself.
It was interesting. If you have gone through one covered bridge all the rest are the same. This one was very sturdy. Not sure if it was worth the drive.
When we drove into Philippi, we came over the wooden Philippi bridge. It was worth stopping on the other side to take photographs. It was very interesting. There was also a museum on the other side of the bridge. Unfortunately, it was closed.
I recommed when your in the area of Philippi, West Virginia to check out the Covered Bridge and other historical landmarks and in West Virginia too A Truely Wonderful Place To Be Proud of...
This is a very historic and beautiful location. The bridge is one the largest covered bridges that you will ever see or drive through for that matter.
If you're a fan of covered bridges, add this to your list! My favorite time is in the early evening, dusk, Philippi is a charming small town and not far from the bridge.

If you like old covered bridges and history, look this one up and go see it.
Very glad the wooden Philippi bridge is still maintained.Read some history and enjoy the past.
Take your time, enjoy the drive and enjoy a real piece of history. Don't expect to make a big commercial thing, it is real country.
