Great place for adults and children. For adults it is the tour across the ship, and the children it's the nighttime laser tag. Very kind tour guide, we saw most of the ship, and it is a must for Lake Charles.
Don't bother with this one. Family showed up and got ousted by laser tag. Outside ports potties rounded out the experience. Not of museum quality!
The tour guide was very informative and showed amazing passion, I recommend this tour for all ages you get to really see the ship in great depth.
PROs:1. Had a personal tour guide.2. Low traffic - you nearly have the whole ship to yourself, hence the personalized tour guides.3. The tour guides work to help restore the ship when they are not touring people/groups, which means they know the ship VERY well!CONs:1. The ship is under a constant state of repair and upgrade, so it's not all spit and polish like most people are used to in museums.2. Pay attention in trying to find the museum. The sign is small and discreet in comparison to most museums. All those things stated, the personal tour guide and intimate knowledge that he shared during our tour made this one of the best naval ship museums I've been to.
We were visiting Lake Charles for a few days and wanted to do more than give money to the casino. I looke dup things to do on Trip Advisor and found the USS Orleck museum. The ship is docked in a temporary location so don't be put off by first impressions of the location. Our son recently joined the Navy so we were interested in seeing what life on a ship was like. Steve was our tour guide and we had a great tour from tip to tail! Dedicated volunteers are working to have the ship restored and placed in a permanant location.
We went on a very cold February rainy day. We were the only ones there, the owner himself gave us the tour. The only problem is that only a portion of the ship is heated (or cooled for the summer) so it wasn't very comfortable. It is interesting, but the ship is in disrepair to some degree. It is also musty. The individual attention and knowledge of the owner is very nice though.
The kids and I arrived after closing time and hoped to just take a quick look around. Volunteer Ron gladly took us on a mini tour. (Very nice gentleman, by the way!) I was skeptical as we drove up to the ship as the parking lot was unmarked and the signage from the road was poor. The family loved it!! We learned much and left with a deeper appreciation for our servicemen and country.FYI…This is not a place for small children. There are no bathrooms on board. You need to be physically able to climb stairs, step over door frames and watch your head as you maneuver through the ship.
First off, anyone planning to visit to be aware that this war relic is still under construction. You must be guided through, there is no roaming around by yourself. Basically, it looks a mess but once you get inside and look around, it's rather interesting. Our guide, Eric, was super friendly and very knowledgeable about the ship. My boyfriend is a huge war history buff, so they had quite a bit of engaging conversation. He loved the whole tour. I, myself, got a little bored toward the end, but that's just because I desperately needed to use the restroom and was dying of thirst. It takes about 2 hours to tour. Wear decent shoes, bc there is a little climbing involved (strictly optional if you are unable to do that) and the floors are very uneven throughout. It cost 10 bucks per person to get in, but they also take donations for restoration of the ship.
Veterans took me on the tour and answered all my questions and was very friendly. This is the best tourist thing I found to do in Lake Charles and it only cost $10.
We arrived at 10:00 AM. It was us and one other couple who signed up for the guided tour. At first glance, the ship itself looks pretty self explanatory. After taking the guided tour, I was thoroughly impressed with the colorful history of the ship during war time. A visit is well worth the time and fee. Definitely a must see when in Lake Charles.
Our tour guide Sam was funny, knowledgeable & interesting! Its sad the ship has fallen into such a state but its inspiring to see the dedicated veterans working to restore it. I highly recommend you take 2 hours out of your day to visit this ship & please donate to keep it around for future generations!
I highly recommend a guided tour of the Orleck. I had a great time exploring this awesome piece of military hardware with my friends. Apparently they also have laser tag games inside every week as well, which I will definitely have to try next time.
Please take the time out to visit this old warrior because you will enjoy it. It's not easy to find the entance to the grand old lady as it is not the best signposted attraction you will ever visit, but do persist as the experience is well worth it. We had an extremely knowledgeable guide called Steve who showed us all over the vessel and gave us all the information necessary to keep us enthralled . Our only sorrow was that we never had the chance to say goodbye and thank him when we left as he certainly helped to make our day really memorable. As our tour around the ship progressed we became more and more enthralled by the exploits of this war vet who has served in so many different campaigns and has so many different stories to tell. Half way round the ship we came across a guy called Glen who was taking a self guided tour of Orleck, which I wouldn't recommend unless, like him, you had served on this beautiful old lady of the sea. Meeting Glen and seeing someone so moved by his visit back to this grand old lady was really quite humbling and he regailed us of many stories of his time aboard whch made our day even more amazing. If, like us you have never been aboard this wonderful ship before, then do take the guided tour as all money raised from this goes to the upkeep of the ship and this really is money well spent. You may be wondering why I entitled this review as 'Star Trek'...............well it is based on Enterprise Boulevard and it is a little bit of a trek to find her but more importantly the ship and everyone who served on her and continues to maintain her is a star.
The ship was interesting with a nice tour guide, but it's a work in progress. Worth a looksee though.
We had such a great time with our visit . You must take the time to visit this world war 2 battle ship the tour guide was great as well. Do not miss this one!
