the mobile zoo

First of all it is kind of hard to find out of the way and it is very small not very many animals but it seemed to me more of an animal rescue than what I consider a "zoo". The habitats for the animals seemed more natural it was pretty warm the day we went and the big cats were moving around and actually playing instead of just laying there or not even visible like in a zoo. You can buy a bag of peanuts to feed to the animals which was entertaining. The staff was very knowledgeable and informative to me it was worth the trip

I really really respect any zoo that tries to do the best they can. The employees that I encountered seemed to have compassion for the animals. Yes, it seems underfunded but I partially blame the local community for not supporting this local zoo. The animals are their to educate and it seems that noone in the Mobile area utilizes it to further establish the needed education in that community. My heart goes out to this zoo and I want to personally that all the animals and employees for a great experience I had at your facility.

This place is not worth it. Hard to find, expensive for a few animals, animals in bad conditions. Wish I would have known about the real conditions before I spent money on gas and admission.

The zoo seemed in desperate need of funding.. I found it tough to actually find my way there. I found it so tough that my Cadillac got stuck on a "dirt road" on my way there despite having GPS. It's on a small road with a small entrance. Zookeepers have a lot of love for the animals. I really loved the gorilla, Joe. I also loved feeding the bears peanuts. This is a great little place which could have huge potential with proper advertisement and funding. Total rating: 4/5 (-1 for location)

Animals are well taken care of and feeding bears is great! The overgrown look is good for the animals as it gives a more natural environment. We will return!

Very disappointed. Was small with hardly no animals and not well maintained. Did get to interact with a few exhibits but overall experience was disappointing. Other than staff we were the only visitors present. It was off the beaten path and not worth going out of the way to get to.

The zoo is owned by a family and is on their property. And, it is near a very large watermelon field! :-) I worked at a local grocery store and met the owners of the Mobile Zoo. The company donated scrap meats to the owners to feed to the animals at the zoo. My family and I have gone to the zoo and it is very unique! It has expanded over the years and has a wide variety of animals to look at. It is a self-guided tour of the premises and the staff is very friendly. The admission price is very reasonable and it is not much more in price to purchase a family annual pass. This may be your best option if you plan on multiple visits in the year. It has an area where you can enjoy a picnic lunch next to a lake. Make sure you accommodate yourself with good walking shoes and a wagon/stroller for young children; you get your exercise in walking. :-) Animals include a giraffe, emus, a zebra, pelican, alligators, foxes, tigers, leopard, monkeys, bears, and much more. There are restroom facilities and they have special events during the holidays with hayrides. It is in a rural area of town and the environment is perfect for the zoo. I personally prefer to go here versus a regular zoo, because the environment is more authentic at the Mobile Zoo.

we drove a long time out in the country--not even in Mobile. We had picked up a brochure in Mobile, and it looked great on the pictures for a small zoo. The cages were small, full of weeds, and very few animals. Joe the monkey is cute and sweet, but you have to feel sorry for him in those conditions.

This is a long, detailed review. The main point is that this zoo was a complete and total disappointment, from the directions getting there, to the customer service, and definitely when it came to the animals (both with the lack of variety offered and the severe lack of cleanliness in the cages). If you want to know my reasons to support this conclusion, I encourage you to continue reading, but if you just want to know whether or not this zoo is worth visiting, you can stop here, as I'm telling you it absolutely isn't...on any level. My boyfriend and I went to the Mobile Zoo in March 2013. We have visited the Gulf Breeze Zoo in Florida, and, wanting to try something different, we traveled the nearly 2 hours from our house to this zoo (which was much closer to Mississippi than we had originally thought). The drive wasn't bad, although our GPS took us across the state line and then looped us back into Alabama, which was a little annoying. The direction we came from had no signage on the road indicating that we were at the zoo; it wasn't until we did a U-turn a few minutes later and drove down the same road in the opposite direction that we saw the sign. We continued to drive down a dirt path that was about 100-feet long, and there were some llamas fenced-in along the entire length of the drive. That was great, but what wasn't so great was the fact that the entire ground was littered in feces. I understand that animals have to defecate, but they were literally standing in it because there were piles everywhere. I've never worked at a zoo, but I would think that the grounds should be cleaned before it got to that point. Anyway, by this point, we're skeptical, especially since there was no designated parking spots, and we weren't even sure the place was still open because the only thing we could see was a run-down, old building with a tiny (like computer-paper size) sign indicating the zoo's entrance. We went in, and there was no one in the "store", only a sign that said to pay upon exiting the zoo, and another sign to pick up a bag of peanuts to feed the animals. We began our journey, and, well, we were done in less than 30 minutes. There were probably only about 10 different animal species total, and I was incredibly disappointed that there was no petting zoo. Furthermore, there was a deer in one of the arenas whose leg was so broken that it was completely black, and that was incredibly heart-wrenching to see. Also, all of the animals' cages were completely overgrown with weeds, leaves and dirt, and I just don't think that's entirely appropriate, either. I've never visited a big zoo (like the San Diego Zoo or the Houston Zoo) so it's not like I had high expectations of this place. However, this place was a complete disappointment, and I don't see how anyone could truly feel as though this place offered a variety of animals. Yes, you are greeted by lots of birds, and yes, there are lions and tigers and bears, as well as monkeys and a few felines, but there isn't a whole lot more than that. No elephants, no giraffes, no zebras, etc. I don't mind a zoo full of smaller, more domestic animals, but, like I said, there wasn't even a petting zoo...so, what's the point? The entire time we were there, we didn't see a single worker; but there was a man (probably in his late-40's) sitting at the register when we went to leave. He was on his phone and he actually told us, "Give me just a minute, I'll help y'all when I'm finished." Yes, he literally said that. We paid, and as we were leaving we wished him a good day. He just grunted back. Terrible zoo and terrible customer service. I will never visit this zoo again, and I would advise others not to, either.

This place was hard to find, a bit off the beaten path. It wasnt as good as other zoos I've been to, however there were quite a few animals I wouldnt have expected for a place like this. The tigers were beautiful but it was hard to take any photos since they were hidden behind trees and bushes. There were tubes for feeding the animals in the cages. You can buy a bag of peanuts to feed most of the animals. The bears were really cute! Overall not a bad experience.

This was was no easy find. Me and my gf were in town for Bayfest 2012 and wanted to get away from the city. We searched all local hot spots and came across this local zoo. We did not have high hopes and upon arrival I would have never thought of what to come. As soon as you walk in your greeted by tons of different birds and a baby deer. Throughout the park you are able to see and feed animals from tigers and bears to panthers and monkeys. This park has alot to offer and I would have never known it had we not just walked in. The parking area is kind of small but that has no effect on the large zoo full of animals. One hint to anyone wanting to visit is to make sure you purchase food in the beginning. For only $3 you get a huge bag of peanuts and you are able to feed the animals through feeding pipes placed throughout the park. Overall this park was amusing and if you are in this area I would recommend you stop by and visit.

When first arriving it didn't look like much. Down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. But when going inside you are greeted with multiple exotic birds. On further exploration you see lions tigers and bears, oh my! We also saw monkeys, reptiles, and much more. All in all a fun and interesting experience. Would recommend to anyone visiting Mobile. And you get to feed them too!!!! :)
