Steep but very accessible drive to parking lot, then a moderate stroll up to the viewing area giving fantastic views over Anchorage & the Cook Inlet. Parking fee $5.
This is an easy to visit spot on Anchorage's east side. From the Glen Alps parking lot, we took a short, easy walk to the Anchorage Overlook at sunset. What a spectacular view!! This is also the parking lot for the Blueberry Loop/Flat Top trailhead. A shuttle runs to this area from Downtown Anchorage during the summer. Weather and parking lot conditions can be seen in real-time by searching "glen alps webcam".
When we read about this attraction, we were concerned that we would be driving up a steep, treacherous road, and that is certainly not the case. It's easily accessible, and a very pleasant drive. Once you arrive at the Trailhead, you have several options as far as hiking and viewing. You can see some magnificent views by hiking short distances, or you can hike up to the top of Flat Top and see even more stunning views. If you're going on a weekend, plan on big crowds and not much parking. There is a small parking area at the Trail Head, and if you park on the road leading into the parking area, you will receive a parking ticket to the tune of $200. It's a shame that Anchorage, with such a beautiful attraction, can't figure out a way to accommodate more folks without gouging them for parking ticket fees! All said, this is a wonderful attraction and well worth the easy drive to the top.
Glen Alps is located at the end of a steep road high above southeast Anchorage. Not near Indian and NOT near Wasilla. Great spot for day hikes in the mountains behind Anchorage. Parking lot often full by mid-day. Don't try parking elsewhere, as you will be ticketed/towed. The lot isn't patrolled and break-in's have been reported. But MOST of the time, it's a great place to get away from "urban" Alaska. Great views of Cook Inlet and the Alaska Range, too.
