We did a short 1 h walk to the russian river falls - saw a lot of salmosns waiting and trying to over the falls was fabulous seeing all the fishes jump up. No bears... But a lot of nature.
The sole reason we went to alaska was to see bears, in fact I've been to alaska multiple times now and Russian river is the only place almost guaranteed to see bears. Between Denali and Seward no where else seems to have such a dense population of bears within driving reach of Anchorage. The fishing is awesome, the bear viewing is amazing and the camping is out of this world..Russian river is possibly my favourite part of all Alaska This is a must do for all thrill seekers...
Stayed at Russian River campground. Great quiet private campsite, river a short walk away. The river walkways are great. Saw multiple bears, salmon, eagles and a lot of people fishing on the river. Wished he stayed here longer than we did. Look forward to going back.
amazing views in the daylight hours. Very good interesting food. Things you wouldn't likely pair at home are the norm here. I had the only normal thing on the menu. Fish and chips excellent. Home made tar tar sauce wow! The server was very personable. Would go again.
Caught several reds and rainbows this year on Kenai River close to head waters of Russian River. Did two floats this year and had good times.
Bears, Bears and more Bears plus the fishing was great, Reds and silvers and more bears, The walk down from the campground is also handicap accessable
We camped here for 3 nights. It was gorgeous in all directions. The steps down the mountainside to the river were very nice and led right to the river. We missed the salmon run, but enjoyed the spacious campsites and the natural beauty. There are no hookups, but there are pit toilets. Most people were in campers, however there were some tent campers.
We have walked this trail a couple of times now, and always see lots of anglers and salmon, it's amazing! There are bears in this area, but other than from a distance away from this trail, we have yet to spot them although reports from others we talked to said they did. Definitely an area not to miss!
We camped here for two nights, great campground, lovely sites. The boardwalk was a great experience and we totally enjoyed the entire experience. The fish were abundant, the campgrounds were clean, no complaints at all.
The fish don't come in like they used to and the crowds are bigger than ever, but the settings of wild beauty makes this place worth a stop. Listen carefully because if the ferry operator blows the air horn there's a grizzly in the immediate area.
Fishing areas were easy to find, signs were pretty clear, parking areas were clearly defined. Disliked not catching what others were having success taking home!
There were so many people fishing here! So it was a bit uncomfortable...but other than that , the fishing was great! Very beautiful place but has bears and mosquitoes.
We arrived on a day that is was raining. the river was high so you could not see the Salmon. we did not catch any and did not see anyone catch any while we were there. Very informative rangers. there was a bear sighted while we were there.
This was a nice hike to the falls. The trail was clear and it was easy going. We were warned about bears, but we didn't see any. This was probably because we didn't see any salmon running either.
Combat fishing is not my cup of tea but the area is popular for fishing for red (sockeye) salmon if you don't mind the crowds. The two mile hike up to Russian River Falls is worth it. Be alert for Brown bears, especially when the salmon are running.
