This Russian Orthodox church is usually only open for tourists when the cruise ships are in, or for services. Yes, it is an active church which still holds services. There is no seating, so be prepared to stand. But, as a tourist visiting the church, I must say it was beautiful inside and well worth going to. There is a clergy member there as well to answer questions, and they do allow photos. A rich history is displayed, with gold chalices, gold framed paintings, etc. Glad we went. Oh yeah! and look up! There are bald eagles perched frequently on the Russian crosses on the steeple!

The presentation on the history of the church was very interesting and it was amazing to walk around and see all the iconography literally covering the walls.

A superb collection of Orthodox religious artifacts. It is a very moving experience even if you are not religious. Lots of history. Highly recommended.

The interior was beautiful and our guide had lots of facts about the icons and paintings. There is a book store as well. Picture taking is allowed and men are asked to remove hats. It was a terrific spot to stop on our tour.

This church looks very ordinary from the outside but once you go inside you will be amazed. I had never been in a Russian Orthodox church before this one and I was splendidly surprised by the religious art, icons and screens. I am glad they saved them from the fire. If you are in Sitka you must visit this church. It is well worth your time.

No visit to Sitka would be complete without a visit to St. Michael's Cathedral. Always colorful and prayerful, this Russian Orthodox church offers a good introduction to those not used to Orthodox churches. Built in 1848 but burned in 1966, it was rebuilt including the screens, icons, and other religious art rescued from the burning building. Across the street from the Cathedral, the bookstore and gift shop offers opportunities to purchase Orthodox icons, books, and souvenirs.

The Cathedral was reconstructed after a major fire destroyed the original, but the reconstruction was done in such a manner that you experience it as it was in its original form. Much history is displayed with good signage for a self guided tour

We got the chance to go into the church and listen to local church member tell about the church and current congregation.

It is very beautiful and still used as a church. I had never been in a Russian Orthodox Church before. Beautiful.

A must for the tourist, very informative woman. Nothing not to like. Liked the history and the beauty. Nothing not to like.

This reminded me of the the churches one sees in Romania and Bulgaria. An old style Orthodox Church. It appears small and plain outside with the onion spires, but is worth the look inside.

I attended an orthodox mass on Sunday for the first time. It was such a great experience and the priest was so kind. I ended up joining he and a few others of the congregation for some snacks downstairs. Tip: listen to the beautiful bells on Sunday morning calling people to mass.
