This is my favorite trail. It is a moderate hike with some short hills but most of it is rather flat. The forest is dense and the forest floor covered with thick mosses, mushrooms, skunk cabbage, and an array of blueberry bushes and other berry-producing plants. It follows along a stream that has a series of water falls. There is a side trail that goes a short distance to a tall waterfall that cascades from the slope of Bear Mountain. The views of Beaver Lake are breathtaking. I jogged this trail a number of times. I absolutely love it!
We did this one clear blue day. It was beautiful. Had a sandwich overlooking Beaver lake. I just wish there was a boat in the lake! That would have made it a perfect day. More signage would have been helpful at times too. lol
My husband and I did this hike with our 2 year old in the backpack and it was one of the best hikes we have done during our 12 days in Alaska. The trail is well maintained and there are excellent areas to eat lunch around Beaver Lake. Do not miss the Beaver Lake part of the trail, fantastic mountain views. I think it took us about 3 hours with a stop for lunch and we did Herring Cove Trail and the loop around Beaver Lake.
I'm a 50 year old woman who 'works out' every day. I thought this trail was rather difficult because more than half of it was either straight up or down - very difficult on the knees. Lots of rewards along the way, however. 3 waterfalls, and beaver lake very cool to walk around. But, I wouldn't do it again. Definitely at least a moderately difficult trail
If you are up for a 60-90 minute walk and have good shoes try this place. At the far end of Sitka so you must have a car.
This is a wonderful trail located at the end of Halibut point road, it is mostly flat, so most anyone can handle it, there are scenic outlooks and one is close to the water at all times.
We had read about the Herring Cove Trail here on TripAdvisor and decided to take a cab out to try it. Our driver warned us of bears in the area and we did see evidence of recent bear activity (large feces on the trail). Despite the danger, we greatly enjoyed the hike. There were several waterfalls and many nice views along the way. The trail only went one way and then connected with the Beaver Lake Trail. We hiked on this second trail until we reached the Sawmill Creek Campground and then hiked Blue Lake Road back to the Fortress of the Bear. We were then able to take the free shuttle from the Fortress of the Bear back into town.If I were to do it all over again, I think I would have taken the Fortress of the Bear shuttle to the Fortress of the Bear first (stopping for some bear pictures of course). Then I would hike up Blue Lake Road to Sawmill Creek Campground. I would next hike the Beaver Lake Trail to the Herring Cove Trail. Once that was complete, I would hike on Sawmill Creek Road back to the Fortress of the Bear, returning via the free shuttle. This would add a few miles to the hike, but it would mean a great deal of money saved (no cab fares). This grand loop would amount to about 7 miles total and would encompass a wide variety of natural sights. If you go, bear spray might not be a bad idea. You wouldn't want to get yourself in trouble out here. We only saw one other person during our entire hike and the trail didn't seem to heavily populated.
The scenery was more than one could ask for with such an easy hike. When the taxi driver brought us she said she loves the trees there and I thought what could be different about the trees. Well they were huge and the lighting and all through the woods just made it amazing. Lots of water falls and the walk around the lake was very pretty.
Sitka is known for its beauty not its excellent restaurants. So if your looking for great trails and fantastic views Sitka is for you!
I liked this trail a lot. One of my favorites quick trails located in Southeast Alaska. I took my five year old and he made it though he was a bit worn out at the end of the loop. That was the plan, so I am glad it worked. Not too tough for him but tough enough he felt it.The trail itself was beautiful and took me and a five year old a little over an hour to do. That was with a stop in Herring cove to throw rocks. It is not a flat trail, this trail had lots of steps. As trails go it wasn't very muddy even though it had been raining for two weeks straight.
I have hiked in almost every National Park im the United States and this hike has far surpassed any other hike I've ever done. There are so many waterfalls, mossy vistas, the gorrgeous Beaver Lake Trail at the end of Herring Cove which you must do, that it is beyond describing other than majestic! The landscape arcitect who planned this trail did an unbelievable job planing the trail along the beautiful vistas and also in using the rocks as steps and the beautiful wood for walkways. This is a "maserati" of hiking trails.
I was with my 30-year old daughter, who is in much better shape than me. The trail is pretty steep at the beginning. I'm going to try it again when I'm in better shape!
really nice hike through a forest, along the coast, and to a secret beach
good hike thru beautiful old growth rain forest and pretty waterfall at end
