What a neat place - we went about 10:30 in the morning - did not have any trouble with mosquitos and were a little disappointed that we didn't see any type of animals. Even though the temp was in the 90's, the walk was very pleasant. The boardwalk is very nice with a lot of informative signs along the way. "Bathroom facilities" are offered in the form of santi-cans and you do need to be aware of mosquitos and other critters.
I had always wanted to go here as I am a major History buff. It was 2 miles back off the main road. There is an automatic gate that opens and closes at certain times and you must be out before it closes.I am glad I went, but I sure couldn't get my hubby to go again.I had planned to do the boardwalk, but when we got out of the car after parking by thelarge blue sign, the mosquitos started to cover us. I hurried to the sign and my husbandtook a couple of pictures of me. They didn't let up. We were covered and tried to dust themoff before getting in the car. When back inside, we killed them for about 10 minutes. Now I have often ran from them when visiting by a well flooded rice field in northeast Arkansas, but thesewere huge. I then got out my information and shared it with my husband. If I had spraywith me, I would have enjoyed the walk. However as we began to turn around a largesnake came out of the area where I had stood to take the picture. I would suggest goingin the well-lighted time of day and taking spray with you and loving history as much as I doto visit this Park.My husband suggests just letting your wife get out on her own!He hates snakes and I don't think he is kidding. I doubt I could gethim there again, but I am glad I went.
This park is the origin of the Louisiana Purchase survey. It consists of a boardwalk out to the start of the survey. There are signs along the walk explaining the purchase, the survey, and the wildlife in the area. The walk takes a total of 30 minutes and is well worth the stop.
If you happen to be in this part of Arkansas, stop by this park. You could easily walk to the monument and back in less than 30 minutes. It was very deserted when we went, a little creepy if I had been alone. But, at the end of the little walkway, you can see the point from where the entire purchase of Western America was surveyed. Kind of a neat bit of history.
The area where the monument marking where they began surveying for the Louisiana Purchase is in the middle of a swamp. Reaching the monument is done by a wooden walkway that leads you to the marker. Though the water isn't deep, you wonder what is in it. It also makes you wonder if it was flooded when they started surveying and why start there. It is a different kind of park because of being where it is and accessability. It is worth seeing just for those facts.
Great day trip. Everytime we stop we see something we have never seen there before. National History
Went in early november and had the whole place to ourselves.Really enjoyed the boardwalk going over the swamp ground leading back to the monument.Very informative for us american history buffs.Little children will be bored after 5-10 minutes.A good stop for about a 1hr visit max.
