We stopped at the Clayton House to find out the winter hours changed. The house is only open on the weekends and we stopped on a weekday; however, the curator was there and she didn't turn us away. She said she would give us a "quick" tour, but she loves her job and the house and ended up giving us the full tour. The home is beautiful and well cared for and the curator is very knowledgeable and friendly. There is a small entrance fee, but it is well worth the price. Check the hours of operation and plan accordingly because if you are a history buff, you'll want to see this home.
An 1890 machine full of antiques. The house is used for.tours.and special events. Ft. Smith was about as civilized in the 1890's as a stampede in the.mud, this amount other homes shows what the affluent people live like. Take the tour.
We weren't aware there was a charge as other homes did not have one and wouldn't have minded the fee except they were setting the house up for an event that evening so the tour was interrupted several times. There were tables being set up in each room and although the rooms are not roped off like some homes, we were not able to move around as well with all the tables and activities of setting up. Our first tour guide was wonderful but she had to leave to work on the event and turned us over to another one and I believe it was her first time as she had a sheet of paper she somewhat read from but mostly just walked from room to room. So the fee was more for a self tour:) The home is a lovely period home with two stories to view as well as a back porch and kitchen. There are tales of ghosts as well. Would have enjoyed it more without event set-up distractions and if original tour guide had been able to take us through the whole house. But gave a higher rating anticipating it would be different if event not being center stage:(
Loved the atmosphere and the neat stuff inside. Great spot for reception!I really enjoyed the upstairs the most
