A real piece of history, from the photos of the Guthries to the fun upstairs props room. I have seen some wonderful musical performances here as well.
George runs a great operation here. Besides the great entertainment in an intimate center, the Center does a lot of good work for the less fortunate in the community.
We dropped in, thinking of Thanksgiving and Alices Restaurant. Love this small, community oriented venue. The facility hosts community meals, concerts, storytelling and spiritual meetings. The staff person was very friendly, showing us this beautiful old church, discussing the venue and its place in the community. It is really worth the visit--we will definately be back for a concert--
Arlo and the volunteers gave a great concert, and the dinner was delicious. The Guthrie Center provides many services to the deserving in the surrounding community.
Great show, great food, great experience. Arlo puts on a great show with lots of storytelling and wonderful songs.
Free lunch is served every Wednesday for up to 50 people. It is a wonderful blend of foods served by volunteers. You meet very interesting folks from near and far.
This yet another Berkshire gem, go for a bite or drinks and listen to some of the best folk music around. The atmosphere is great and is a perfect Berkshire venue.
What a lovely venue! Intimate, yet not crowded. This was just the perfect spot to watch The Nutopians perform their tribute to John Lennon on a summer weekend. The Center has small tables for dining and watching. The lobby is filled with memorabilia from Woody and Arlo and the church formerly owned by Alice & Ray Brock. The food service is offered up by Center volunteers, so there was quite a long wait to put in an order, and they ran out of a number of menu items. However, the guests were pleasant and chatty, so it helped to pass the time. The food was served quickly, very good, and reasonable (not cheap, but reasonable). The menu was limited, but we shared a lovely salad with grilled salmon, a cheese and fruit platter and an amazing piece of cake. The wine and beer were very reasonable at less than $5 each, as was the bottled water. We found the acoustics wonderful for the show that we saw. Growing up with Woody and Arlo's music, and spending each Thanksgiving listening to "Alice's Restaurant" it was just so cool to be in the church. It was especially inspiring to know how the community rallied round to create the Guthrie Center, and put this special place to use as a community gathering spot to benefit all.A note: Our show was general admission, and we arrived when doors opened to get a good seat. Those that arrived close to show time, were observed scrambling to find seats, some up in the balcony....some doubling up with others. Plan ahead and arrive early, if you can.
It's always a pleasure to receive positive reviews... We've just begun this summers (2014) series of music and art with the addition or a real chef in our kitchen. Not doubt we'll keep tweaking the menu until it settles in to something worth coming back for again and again. And I'm thrilled that I finally figure out how to respond to those of you who take the time to give us some feedback here on TripAdvisor. I'll continue to do that as time and circumstance allow... Thanks Again, Arlo Guthrie
Recently we spent a month in the Great Barrington area. We rented a home and then hiked and visited the history and farmer’s markets in the area. We went to the Guthrie Center one evening when they had a music concert. It was $5 per person at the door, and had refreshments for sale. It started at 8 and had 7 or 8 performers who sang folk and country music. The audience was small, but it was worth hearing. There is not a lot to do at night in this area, but this is a nice way to spend a couple of hours after dinner.
You can get a light meal and then enjoy the performance with a wonderful acoustic experience (little amplification of sounds).
Finally made it there after many years of wanting to go. We went to see my favorite band. The place was great. Smal menu, but good stuff! I can't wait to go again!
Saw Arlo in concert earlier this year and checked out the Guthrie Center online so we wanted to stop by while we were in the area. Now I'm really bummed that we missed the hootenanny after reading a previous post. Nice people, good vibe, and worthy mission. A must stop to educate future generations.
Perfect dose of the 60's updated and refreshed with a tidy selection of food and beverages for dinner. We have been enjoying this venue for years, watching it become more polished...but not too much.
Yep! That is what it is called and they happen on Thursday nights. Lots of fun if you enjoy music of the 60s and 70s. We brought two families and sang for hours. At the end of every hootenanny, the entire group joins in and sings This Land is Your Land, This land is My Land! Fun! I have never been to a concert here - but the stage is beautiful!
