This is a must see. If you see an event advertised show up just to see the amazing organ and woodwork if not for anything else. You will not be disappointed.
This place is truly a gift to the community. It probably could not be built today. When you initially walk in you are awestruck by itd beauty,
Wonderful place to visit. Have free or reasonable priced concerts all year round. They have special event in the summer and over the holidays Very worth the visit
Last night we were at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall for one of their organ concerts. If you have never been, you should go sometime, just to be blown away by the architecture and the grandeur of an organ that is over 150 years old. The scene is almost beyond belief, and the music is spectacular with organists playing weekly from all over the world. The organist last night is originally from Montreal, is now the organ professor at Baylor University in Texas. A fantastic performance in a fantastic place. Don't be put off by the rather severe and plain exterior, the inside is a whole different world - and then there is that organ. The concerts are very reasonably priced, this summer they were $12.00 - and that has been the price for a number of years. Special concerts may be a little more, and also there are free concerts. If you go to their site you can find dates and who is playing and prices.
I visit my family in Lawrence once a year and lived there for 10 years and never knew about this .. Finally got to visit and was very glad I did.. Wonderful story on how the instrument got to Methuen and just amazing to be there to admire..Just went back with my teenage son.. Never disappoints
Organ recitals every Wds Nite in the summers. Only $12THE VERYBEST for your $.A huge variety of performers from all over the world!
Growing up in this area, I heard many times the name Serlo Organ, now called the Great Organ, but I never entered attended a performance until last evening. The exterior of the hall is rather unremarkable, but once you enter the soaring barrel shaped dome, elaborately decorated and housing one of the largest organs in the world, the hall and organ almost defy description. We were just fortunate to be able to attend the magnificent Wednesday night concert by Erik Wm. Suter of Maryland, one of a series of 15 concerts held from May to December. The history of how the organ was brought to the small town of Methuen by Edward Searles is a fascinating story of a true rags to riches individual who gave back to his birthplace. There are a Sunday afternoon concerts and special concerts for 4th of July and for the Christmas season. On site parking is free, there is a small gift shop and comfortable seating right in back of the organ and balcony seating also. Methuen is about 30 miles north of Boston off Rte 93 so is easy to access. If you have a chance to hear this spectacularly beautiful and wondrously sounding organ, go!
You must go, at least once. The architecture is amazing. The organ is breathtaking. You can't believe that it is in Methuen! The concerts are reasonably priced. The sound is thrilling. Parking is available.
I have attended numerous concerts here. The architecture is stunning. The building was erected specifically for the organ it houses. The sound is amazing. Being in the music hall adds to any epxerience.
Everyone should go to the Methuen Memorial Music Hall at least once. From the outside it is does not look like much, just a brick building.... ahhh but the inside... amazing. So beautiful. Like stepping back into an elegant time. The organ is so large and the sound even larger. The sound is so amazing at every seat. There is a concert series every year, plus special events... try try try to go to one of them!
MMMH was purpose-built to house this organ, originally ordered for Boston Music Hall as the first concert organ in the US in the 1860's. Boston turned to its symphony and had the organ removed, which is now Methuen's gain and Boston's loss. The building was designed by Henry Vaughn as is so beautiful and lively in sound the is the attention wanders from the music there is always "music" for the eyes. The organ was overhauled in 1949 by Aeolian-Skinner and today is maintained by Andover Organ Company, a neighbor of MMMH. There is a varied concert program but the most amazing thing is simply seeing this magnificently carved organ case, one of the most beautiful in the world. It sounds good too!!
great place for the holidays family and all who enjoy great music the organ is beautiful, a must visit .
I went there for a christmas concert they had. The music was ok. What suprised me the most was that they never played the organ. It is the main centerpiece of the hall. I was very confused
I discovered this attraction when I went to the local library and the librarian recommend this hall. There is a history associated with this place going back over one hundred years. I went to an open house during the Christmas season and thought I was in a concert hall in Austria. Many local musicians showcased their talents. Definitely a must do in the Methuen area.
This building was built to house this magnificant organ and provides sounds that are beautiful. We attend the Xmas concert every year and love the sounds. The building is also beautiful to look at.
