This place has been fixed up in recent years, which I think has been really great! Our grandmother used to bring us here back when the beach was free for everyone. I think there are still areas that are free, and that you can grill at, but I am not sure which ones. There is still a nice playground area for kids to play at and you can still walk around the old fort. However, there is a sewage treatment plant right nearby, so on certain days it can smell. But, right next to the beach and has a good view of the lighthouse.
This review is more for the Fort Taber Military Museum, than it is for the park and the fort. The museum is in a building and has a top notch collection of military items from all of America's armed conflicts. It is also a tribute to our veterans, and those in particular from New Bedford. Robert Bromley does an outstanding job of running this museum, as does his dedicated staff. The building has tastefully done displays of original donated artifacts, in several different rooms; each representing a different era. There are also presentations by qualified speakers. The museum gets better with each visit. I highly recommend that you stop in during one of your visits to the fort. Two rabbit ears up!!(\ (\( -.-)o_(")(")
We brought out of town visitors to the the park. Beautiful museum located on the property. A long pier dedicated to the Merchant Marines is nice to walk out on. Incredible views of the ocean, Butler's Flat lighthouse. Great place to go walking, bike riding, picnic area. We visited one time when they had a local car show going on. Great free entertainment with breathtaking views.
Stayed the whold day,, nice place to walk or ride a bike, plus a beach, place to pick up food, restrooms, clean,,,,,bring your chairs or use the benches they provide, great view of the Ocean and boats in and out of the harbor. Take pictures of the fort, check out the tank and memorial they have for Women in the service and so much more. And no charge to get in..Where can you beat that. You have to see this one.
This is such a beautiful and historical park. If you have the chance be sure to see the museum and also try to catch the sunset. Great place for photos!
I wasn't sure how to rate this park so I am giving it a 5 based on the crown jewel in has: the Military Museum and the volunteers that work there. Check before you go and make sure it is open. Its pretty amazing how they have organized it and the amount of interesting material they have. A great deal of effort has gone into this museum and it was an honor to be able to see it and talk to those who are running it. My only disappointment was the 15.00 parking fee. I wasn't told that to see the museum only you didn't have to pay for parking. (should have checked the website prior) The grounds were nice but you couldn't go in the fort or see inside. If my entrance fee is helping to restore this area or to pay for Vets to get in the museum for free, than worth the price. Great tribute to our military and all of their sacrifices!
They have a small militia museum, playground could be updated due to wear in tear, i live down the street and walk here often, need a city pass for summer time but if you walk there and park else where its free. If not 5$ for a pass. Forts could be renovated with lights to enable people to explore the forts.
Very good views here of Buzzards Bay and the Elizabeth Islands including Naushon, Nashawena, Pasque and Cuttyhunk. There is a museum here as well.
i'm always telling my friends about how historic New Bedford/ fairhaven is and whenever i bring them down to Mass i feel as if i HAVE to show them Fort Taber. Although it's a shame i have to pay to get in. The sites are perfect of a bluebird day. Some places are a little eerie, however there is a lot of other places to climb and explore and stroll through.there is also a small play ground which is fairly new and i enjoy visiting with younger family members and sometimes enjoy the swings my self. Sometimes we bring food and drinks and have a picnic/cookout.The city has done a wonderful job of keeping up with the landscaping throughout the years as well !
Fort Taber park overlooks Buzzard's Bay and is a great spot for a stroll on nice days. You will find yourself with a lot of company, including cyclists and dog walkers.
Fort Taber Military Museum is in the charming, old Whaling town of New Bedford, located in Ft. Taber-Fort Rodman Park. The Museum looks small, but is big in Military history. It’s staffed by veteran volunteers who truly enhance the visit with personal stories and stories from prior visitors. Exhibits cover all military branches from the Revolutionary War thru Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) displaying: personal artifacts, photos, biographies, uniforms, guns, ammo, replica plane and ship models by the case full and so much more. While there, several visitors identified their family member in photographs and news articles. A MUST SEE!
Fine site on a peninsula protecting New Bedford harbor, fort designed by Robert E. Lee while he was still US Army, but we can't access the fort itself so it's an accessory to a lovely park which is otherwise not worth a visit from someone not from New Bedford and seeking a sea view.
we visited family in New Bedford. the hype was about visiting Boston. we had one evening and we used TripAdvisor to search for close by places and came across this fort. its a beautiful place for an evening stroll. as most forts, the inside is not accessible. but you can walk around. it also has a long pier with a catch and release fishing option. the fish in that area is apparently contaminated and should not be consumed. most of this place is easily wheelchair accessible and kids enjoy the semi-rough climbing on the rocks etc. the museum is small but very informative. it is open from 1-4pm only. Overall it is a good place to spend an evening if you are in the area.
There is a military museum on the grounds that shouldn't be missed. It covers from the civil war to the war in Afganistan. With pictures and memorabilia. So impressive!
We went to New Bedford specifically to see the Whaling Museum (we live about an hour away). Because the Whaling Museum only took us a few hours to go through and it was a sunny day, we decided to drive out to Fort Taber Park. It is much as the other reviewers have described, so I'll try not to repeat too much here. We visited in late May 2013, and they hadn't yet started charging for parking, nor did we see a snack bar or bathrooms open (though there was 1 porta pottie there) -- guess it wasn't quite tourist season yet. While we were there, there was some type of military ceremony (for Memorial Day weekend) going on in front of the museum, so we didn't visit the military museum. The fort (at least from the outside) is very interesting looking. There didn't appear to be any way to go inside, but a few holes have been cut out of some windows, which allow you to catch a quick glimpse of what it looks like inside. We spent our time there walking around the property and beach combing a bit. There are several little beaches there at the park. On the "bay" side of the park, we some fairly clean and sandy beach along with one that had a lot of glass and trash on it (near the fishing pier). The beaches on the "ocean" side of the park were very rocky -- to swim on this side would require some treacherous rock crossing. Whatever beach you go to, I'd definitely recommend bringing some decent shoes. We found some decent pieces of sea glass (mixed in with sharp, recent glass). For those readers really serious about collecting sea glass, there are a few "keepers" here. Mostly, the sea glass here is of craft quality, meaning that it's pretty well frosted on all sides, but there are a few chips in the glass, and/or the corners of the shards haven't been rounded off yet. We did find an old frosted marble and several pieces of some very old Coke bottles on the ocean side, which made the beachcombing trip worth it.The main warning I'd issue here is to beware of foul smells on windy days. The beach is right next to a Water Treatment Facility. As such, if it's windy, and the wind shifts just right, prepare to hold your nose! In addition, because it's right next to a water treatment facility, there are those that may not feel comfortable swimming here. It's definitely a nice park, though.
