If you're looking to practice or don't want to worry about where your ball goes, go to Wayland Country Club. There's 8 or so fairways parallel to each other, it's relatively flat, and you can't get into too much trouble. It's a "nice" place to play.If you want more of a challenge, go to Sandy Burr. There are up-hill, down-hill, rolling-hill fairways. Short and narrow. Dog-legs. Way more interesting topography. The front 9 is particularly challenging; the back can get a bit boring (but the back is also easier to walk, if you're not into carts). SB is a bit more expensive, but you get more of a golfing experience. And with more "better" golfers there -- because it's a more complex course and more expensive -- the game tends to move along a little faster.
The Sandy Burr is a beautiful, way tended golf course. The staff is friendly and professional, the holes offer plenty of challenge but are not so difficult as to frustrate all but the best golfers. I will note that the women's tees do give quite a bit of advantage to the ladies. The tudor style clubhouse could be called either charming or a little dated. But forget the clubhouse, come to Sandy Burr for a great day of golf.
