Have camped here several times while visiting Salem. Close to downtown and convienient trolly service if you do not mind the view of the power plant. the place has really been suffering from neglect over the years
Great for camping & the view of the sunsets are amazing! The only dislike that I can think of is that they don't have sewer hookups but is no problem as the plant is down the road to dump
This is a lovely stretch of land that offers magnificent views, cooling breezes, and the illusion that you are far, far away from everything, when you are really in the heart of a metropolitan area. It is a great place for nature watching and a picnic; well worth the trip.
Pretty marina area with a great overview on the other side across the bridge to Beverly, MA. The camping area is small, but clean looking. Lots of boats are docked there.
We booked a spot for our 21 foot travel trailer a few months ago for Columbus Day Weekend. Easy check-in and friendly staff. SMALL spaces. About 15 feet. If you have a camper with slide-outs, it's going to be TIGHT!!! Good water pressure and safari field was nicely maintained. Dumpsters not marked on map, so we left our large bag of trash next to the trash cans on the safari field. Also, roadway to the campground is VERY tight as are roads inside camping area. Dump station is at the power plant next door (save the tag that you hang in your car/camper window for access). Ground fires not permitted, but you CAN bring your own little fire pit. Safari field camping is never private, but this was SUPER close and we would not stay again unless we were visiting Salem or had a boat. Those would be the only two reasons I would ever recommend anyone staying at Winter Island overnight.
Winter Island has it all for the traveler. We camped in October which was a little cold but they have wonderful showers. You can't beat the view from the Island and the stories you hear there are frightfully fun. Great camping for the entire family.
How beautiful it was up there we saw this as part of the trolley tour. If I were a camper I'd come right here. The harbor was beautiful.
My family & I have been around to a lot of campgrounds....From the Carolina's to Texas to Florida then back home to Salem (lived here when I was young) Winter Island was a wonderful surprise as I did not know this park was here before. Camping out and hearing the ocean waves from our site was so relaxing. The beach (Waikiki ) was great, especially for September. We caught a nice weather weekend so my son got to enjoy playing in the water while my husband and I got some sun. Everything about the park was clean, bathrooms, campsites, trails. All were great. I love lighthouses so having one at the park was nice to see. Staff was polite & helpful as we extended our stay one more night & gave us info on a future booking. Plan to stay a week next time! :)
My husband and I made our first visit out to Winter Island a couple days ago and fell in love with the park! We went on the trail past the lighthouse, some bunkers, Pebble Beach, and Waikiki Beach, then we went back to the lighthouse to watch the sunset. It was quiet and beautiful. We think next time we go that we will bring a grill and maybe rent a kayak... Such a cool place! Wish we'd gone sooner!
I love it here! When I lived in this area, this is where I would spend my days off. I would read in the park and just take in the sights, sounds and smells of the area. There is a small "boardwalk" area with arcade type games and ice cream stands. I could watch the boats go in and out all day!
We saw this park as part of the trolly tour. It seems to be a trailer park as there were numerous RVs, big and small and lets just say an interesting bunch of people along the small beach.
A hidden part of Salem, this Waikiki beach is sandy, but quite small and cramped. There is reasonable swimming, and it is close to Salem Harbor and water activities such as kayaking. It is somewhat expensive to park, and is one of the few locations where you can camp around Salem, although you do have in-and-out privileges. If you want a beach day on your trip to Salem, this is the place to go.
Small park there is a fee to park and visit for the day,It was very nice and clean , love the ocean
We don't camp out like many but that's OK. Depending on when you go it can be nice and peaceful or a smidge noisy and kid filled. Go early and during the week if you can or Spring or Fall and you'll have the place largely to yourself. You can walk around and visit the beach or sit and read. Not really a whole day thing, maybe a morning or an afternoon.
While the view looked pretty amazing, the living quarters looked quite tight. If you're into camping in extremely tight quarters, Salem Willows is for you. You're not too far outta town to walk in and see the sights.
