This was by far the most crowded State Park I've ever been to. The water is disgusting if you can get down to it with all the screaming children and crowded beach. Don't expect to find a grill available either.
We went to the park to see the Light and were a little disappointed that we could not get to it - there was a very high chain link fence with barbed wire on the top - hard to photograph. The view is spectacular and we actually saw two deer grazing. Would go back when it is warmer to check out some other areas of the park.
The sites are big and secluded. We were in the full service loop, Tulip, and it was great. My only negative comment is the water tastes yuck. Use it to shower and wash dishes, but if you are going to add to something you cook, use bottled water. You could bring your own from home. Other than that, we will return in the Spring.
Just got back from a 'tent only' camping in their campground and our stay was very pleasant. As first time camper with 2 little kids, it was a very good experience for us. Our site was spacious, staffs were friendly and very helpful. The area is clean and the historical sites inside the park is definitely a plus. Will come back again and hopefully, will stay longer.
I have sailed around this park many times, but was happy to go check out the fort and camping facilities this time, I would definitely come back to camp for a couple days. The fort and Prison was a nice attraction and was in good shape.
We camped here for Labor Day weekend on the Tulip Loop which was pet friendly and had full hook up. Our site was very private, level and clean. The only problem we had during our stay was the bugs. We all came home with a bunch of bites even with using the bug spray. After exploring the park we were very pleased to find a beach that allowed our chocolate lab to enjoy the bay with us. The beach was not crowded and the water was beautiful. It was a great day for our family.
My wife and I were going to the beach on Labor Day weekend. But the people there were well lets just say we decided it was best NOT to get out of our car.
We stayed at Point Lookout State Park on more then one occasion. It was a wonderful spot to fish, crab, sight see both beaches and historical locations. We had the best time and different experience during each visit. Fort. Lincoln was a wonderful but small Fort. was one of the best historical things on the site but only took about 10 mins. to go though. The beaches were nice and had a nice place to BBQ. We found some pretty sea glass on the beach. The Saint Mary's area right out side of the park offered some enjoyable all day historical sites to go though.
This park is located where the Potomac River meets the Chesapeake Bay. All major U.S. historical events left their marks here, from Captain John Smith’s exploration in 1612 to a strategic lookout for British ships during the Independence War and War of 1812 to a fort stronghold against potential Confederate attacks during the Civil War. Today it offers something for everyone, a lighthouse, an reconstructed fort, a mature museum, a swimming area with sandy beach, an overnight campground, and boating and fishing.
We drove in for the day just to explore. Brought our two kids and bikes all around. It was nice but visiting once was enough. The lighthouse was closed and even blocked off so we couldn't even get a picture of it.
We have stayed here twice now on the Lanier loop, which is a no pets loop. The bath house on this loop is extraordinarily clean and the camp hosts take great care of the spot. The exterior sites on the loop are mostly very private as they are set deep on the lot. Sunup and sunrise were terrific. Bugs were not terrible in June-although we did need bug spray--but that's camping in the summer. The camp office, camp store, camp host and rangers in general are all friendly and helpful. Unfortunately we missed the lighthouse opening, but that means we have a reason to go back next month
Nice nature center and trails, though some blocked due to recent rains. So hikers should wait for a dry spell if they want to walk much. Beautiful water views, and has a good pier for fishing also. Don't forget to pick up a map!
This is a gem of a state park. The Greenwood loop as mentioned by others has fabulous views of the creek and lake...and the causeway with the bay nearby. The camp office, camp store, camp host and rangers in general are all friendly and helpful. We chicken-necked for crabs off the floating dock nearby and visited the beach elsewhere in the park for swimming. The beach was clean, with plenty of picnic areas and shade...plus well staffed by life guards. Nice shallow swimming. The beach was very busy on the weekend--but it was a nice busy, mostly with young families having fun--not a careless or raucous crowd. We visited the lighthouse (it's open just once a month) and that was neat (we didn't see any ghosts) and in the past have enjoyed the nearby monuments. The camp office has ice and ice cream among other things, and the camp store itself down the road has a variety of souvenirs and bait.
Maryland's Point Lookout State Park in Scotland, Md. is one of the finest parks in the Eastern Seabord of the US. It combines a large assortment of spacious and attractive camping spots in several different loops.....some with electricity and water hookups and all with commodius toilet and shower facilities. Two of the loops....Greens and Hoffmans even feature piers at which to dock your boat during your stay.!!.....there is an excellent boat launching facility with extensive parking and a separate fishing pier for those who wish to fish from shore. The park occupies the entire end of a penninsula at the entrance of the Potomac rive to the Chesapeake Bay. There is a lighthouse at the tip of the penninsula which can be visited on certain days and plenty of parking nearby to enjoy the vista of the river on one side and the bay on the other. There is also a Civil War Memorial on the grounds commemorating the prisoner of war camp. A large picnic area with access to a large protected beach for swimming also occupies the park. Be forewarned that all this beauty comes with a bevy of bugs and plenty of summer heat so gazebo's with mosquito netting will be much appreciated!
Beautiful, clean and friendly. Office, camp store employees and Park Ranger were all helpful. Happy I didn't listen to some of the negative reviews!
