'Nuff said. Put this one on your bucket list if you're at all interested in wreck diving. It's a bit of an aggressive dive, so you really need an Advanced certification if you want to see anything below the first deck, but it is well preserved and big enough that you will want to dive it quite a few times to see more of the wreck.
The water was on the cool side and unfortunately the air temperature even moreWe dived this wreck with southpoint divers. Just four of us and a guide and we had this vast wreck to ourselves The visibility was clear. If you're a diver and in the area then you must visit here
depth of dives about 110 ft.70 degreed.30 to 40 ft visibilityslight current.very good dive with ropes going down to dive. some fish but they were not there the day we went. nice intact wreck. large compartments easy in and out.
We went out with Captains Corner -- good shop. Seas were predicted to be 5 ft, but we got perhaps 2. Minimal current, but probably 30 ft of visibility. We spent our time touring the decks, which are unusual mostly because of the two big satellite arrays. We really didn't see much in terms of life, but that might have been because we couldn't see very far. Some folks dropped down into one of the cargo holds, which apparently allows you to swim out the side, but we didn't try that - just looked dark and spooky to me. Maybe next time. It's a pretty big wreck and pretty deep so you could do a number of dives within recreational limits before you've seen a lot of it.
If you have the advanced/ deep/ overhead environment qualifications to go past 60' It is a great dive. Unless you are only into the macro lifeforms, this wreck can take 3 or more days to complete. I always find something new & I've been diving it since it was a new wreck.
We booked a wreck diver over a week in advance and were shocked when it was cancelled at 9:00 PM the evening before our scheduled dive. It appears the dive companies need the tourists from the cruise ships to fill their dive slots and visitors who fly or take a car only fill "extra" slots. Bottom line is to not plan to complete the dive unless you are part of a cruise.
Did a double afternoon dip on the Vandy last October and we were the only dive boat moored there!WOW is all I can say, my non diving buddy that I was with asked me how it was and all I could say is "I'm speechless"I was diving with a guide and we were on Nitrox so we spent most of the time inside the ship. There are many fantastic long swim throughs. The one that sticks in my mind the most was one where emerged from the hull and swam up through the center of one of those huge round antenna's.I would highly recommend diving it with a guide as the currents can be very strong and you'll certainly get to see more of the fun stuff!!!!
The staff at Finz was excellent and accomodating. They made arrangements for me to do a refresher the day before the dive. The only snafu was that part of the group was over and hour late and put us behind. Even though we were the first to the Vandenberg. The predive briefing was excellent. The dive was excellent. A wreck I would dive againg in the future. Cheers
This is a great dive. Lots of history and great to see such a beautiful ship repurposed not once, but twice now for everyone to enjoy. Try to get a double-dip on this one and you will still not see everything. Good for both newer divers as well as more advanced divers.
Huge, amazing wreck. You could dive it a hundred times and just begin to see it all. Had great conditions with barely any current and calm seas for a double dip on this as part of my Advance Open Water class. Would love to dive it again.
We had pretty good viz and little current. The ship is still is good condition. I went with a guide since I had not been on this wreck before. The only down side is that it is deep so you lose bottom time.
did the dive two years ago. It was good but dangerous. Be experienced. Two days before I arrived a diver disappeared.
we dove the Vandenberg the week it was sunk now several years later we have returned and what a different ship it has become there is coral and fans now the fish are abundent
Great wreck dive. Plenty of fish now call this home. Saw some goliath grouper and other big boys. Not much current on the morning we went. Most boats in key west now make a few trips/week out to the Vandenberg. Definitely worth a trip.
A great site that continues to get better as it ages. Several dive operators offer trips to the sight.
