not Everyone knows about this place as majority of the people goes to Batad. Me and my friend was driving to this place and was totally blown away with the scenery. perfect for people who dosent really trek a lot and just wants to do a bit of sightseeing.
Hapao is a short ride from Banaue town with many motor tricycles taking you there for a rreasonable fee. As a set that is not overrun with tourists this makes fo a great afternoon excusion and is fully accessible by foot and open to tourists, with long steep steps to get down to the base and then the walls betwene the terraces are slightly wider than other terraces - but there is a hairy metal aerial bridge to get across - not for the feint hearted and it is a steep concrete climb back up. Thsi site is NOT a tourist trap, no 'indigenous' people in traditional dress touting for photos or tacky souvenir shops but there are the local children who love the attention from the tourists and havign their photo taken as they run along the walls like mountain goats, as a tourist you will need to wear decent sturdy shoes and be careful when wet (which it often is in Banaue)
The view of the Hapao Rice Terraces is different from Banaue rice terraces. Worth the trip because we were able to stay at the middle of the rice terraces and walk the rice paddles. What an experience! Plus, the whole Hungduan including Hapao rice terraces are UNESCO world heritage site.
A bit far from Banaue around 30 minutes by tricycle before you reach the starting point of the trek. It was manageable though and with a great scenery to look at you wont feel any sweat! Lovely worth a visit! The terraces here are wider compared to those in Banaue and Batad. Hire a guide! And by the way there's a waterfall down the end of the trek. It was a refreshing bath!
Trek was easier as compared to Batad (from Saddle Point). The sight on the way is very beautiful as you walk along the rice paddies. Our tour guide Elmer was very good in explaining everything. We were lucky to find Giovanni's Place in the middle of the rice fields where we stayed for a night at a very affordable price. The place is not yet finished but you can already sleep comfortably :) Owner is very friendly and accommodating. She cooked for us. She even gave me hot water for shower :)
The walk is lovely and you walk right along the terrace walls. We've been 3 times now as the reward at the end is a hot spring and a cold (very cold!) rushing river with pools to dip in. We took a guide the first two times, but not the third. If you're not in a rush, walk back on the other side to the one you walk in on (not much more time - maybe extra 20 mins) and you get a much better feel of the space and the size of the terraces. This last time we went there are now two 'toilets' to use / change in for a nominal fee, a lady collecting donations and someone had set up a snacks stall - but the stall may have been as it was very high season. Still doesn't detract from how great it is to plunge in the cold river and then bask in the warm springs. Clean, friendly and not too difficult to get to.
The jeepney ride to Hapao was very bumpy and muddy since the roads were being repaired. The hike to the hot spring was long and difficult for older folks. There are some portions of the hike where you have to walk on the rice paddy borders made of stones. If you lose your balance, you either fall into the mud or the next level down, or a cliff. But it is worth the hike. I just wished they would warn you about the challenges of the hike, since we had someone with us who had arthritis. You go through a school for small children, as well as homes of residents and you get to see how they live.
Because these terraces are located a lot lower than the Banaue and Batad terraces, the chances are that you will have better weather/sight in the wet season.Walking through these fields can be really meditative. There are beautiful lookouts throughout the walk. And you can easily combine it with a trip to the hotspings. The hike is far less intense than a hike through the Banaue fields and the views are quite different as well.
build by the resident ingenousity the hapao terraces a truly adorable place, but need to have precautions for people with asthma , heart or health problems , you willhave to trek for almost 2 hours to go down and another 2 hours tyo return, not reccommended for persons with dissability
This was our first stop. The road was crazy bumpy and muddy. We encountered some huge mudslides that our tricycle somehow drove through and one that closed the road. We had to walk because the mudslide closed the entire road. The Hapao terraces was really nice. Seemed newer than Batad and the concrete walkways were more even so the walk in the rice terraces was easier. If your tricycle gets stuck, get out and push it!
The hot spring is definitely perfect for anybody who love hot spring... we had a long walk going to spring and see the fantastic view of hapao.....
Another stunning highlight of our trip to the rice terraces. Note that the Hapao Terraces are separate from Banaue, our rickshaw driver recommended we visit these terraces first (we came here in the morning). Spare about 4 hours for the Hapao Terraces. You can walk through the rice fields, and take a dip at the hot springs. Be sure to have your guide with you because you can get lost, it's a 45 minute walk (one way), and another 45 going back. You can bring some snacks, or some lunch to eat the springs.
Hard to judge which rice terraces were the most beautiful between Banaue, Hapao and Batad but Hapao definitely took our breath away. We also ventured by ourselves to find the natural hot springs and we would probably recommend having a guide with you. We got lost a couple of times and only when we saw other tourists could get back on track. 5 minutes away we were about to turn back because we couldn't find it, but a lovely local woman showed us the rest of the way. We gave her a gift of money afterwards (she also stuck around while my partner enjoyed a wee soak) which she completely unexpected and we had to insist. A perfect day trip from Banaue, but hopefully the roads are better when you get there :) (Worth it though!)
Takes about an hour to walk through the Hapao rice terraces to the hot water pool. In June, the terraces were bright green and yellow, and a treat to the eyes! So many photograph-worthy points throughout the trek. You pass by a few houses, some local farmers/children and barely any tourists. The hot water pool and cold stream at the end of the trek are a great place to relax.
Loved it on the first day when we arrived in Banaue to have a easy walk around the lush green rice terraces. The trip from banaue takes some time but its worth it to see this man made marvel.
