This, our second charter with Sail Caribe, was another superb experience. The company consistently offers high quality, well equipment boats and excellent service. The Spanish Virgin Islands offers all of the beauty and natural wonder of the British Virgin Islands (one of the most popular chartering locations on earth), but without the crowded anchorages. While the sailing is a bit more challenging than the easy, protected waters of the BVI, the intrepid sailor will be rewarded with serenity, beauty, and often, even solitude.Initial communication with Sail Caribe may take a little extra effort, but the staff is efficient and accommodating. The fleet is smaller than the big, international charter companies, but Sail Caribe offers superior boats that are well maintained. They know each vessel well.On arrival, from the airport pickup to getting on board, everything ran efficiently. There are golf carts pulling trailers to whisk you and your luggage through the expansive Puerto Del Rey Marina and quickly get you aboard your yacht. Most of the yachts are docked very near the restroom/shower facilities.Compared to a couple of years ago when we chartered with Sail Caribe, the staff seems larger and more energetic. Special thanks to Brian for the excellent check out briefing and attention to detail. Ziggy took note of every minor concern we had and immediately checked every part of the boat to make sure everything was in perfect working order. We had one of the most trouble-free weeks in my over 20 years of chartering. Don't miss a chance to have a conversation with Boris. He speaks with a Russian accent and has some great stories. He also knows a lot about boating, the Caribbean, and life.We sailed the Lagoon 400, and excellent, though compact, vessel. The winds were blowing in the 20's most of the week, but the Lagoon took it all in stride with a double reefed main. The Yanmar diesels were strong and dependable, and it was great having a generator on board. The Spanish Virgin Islands offer a pristine natural beauty with just enough amenities to take care of your needs. You'll have to conserve water - we made it through 7 days with one tank and had some left over. Enjoy Culebra, Culebrita, and Vieques, each which offer unique beauty and history. Brian can tell you about a trail you can take to Flamenco Beach from an anchorage off Culebra - that's the best way to do it.All in all, Sail Caribe continues to offer superb boats and service with great people. We recommend them for anyone to take a step up to the Spanish Virgin Islands or a long trip through the SVI, BVI, and USVI.
Very positive experience again with SailCaribe. First time was a leisurely week on a large Cat with family. This time with 3 serious sailors who wanted brisk ocean 'rail in the water' (well almost..) sailing. Service was terrific; Jeanneau 349 was great (a few minor things); anchorages were quiet and scenery of the Spanish Virgin Islands was gorgeous and mostly uncluttered with development.
My family of five chartered with Sail Caribe over New Years week and would highly recommend. Most thorough checkout ever (20+ bareboat trips)-Graham, Pam and Brian were all great. We chartered the Jeannau 409 2013 which was the best provisioned boat we have had. Sailing grounds were excellent-clear water, good snorkeling with a nice mix of in town activities and quiet anchorages. The islands had a sort of half Mexico, half Caribbean vibe with all the locals being friendly and mostly speaking English. Everywhere was clean without any signs of trash or crime potential. All in all, I would highly recommend for a bareboat trip, especially for those that have done the usual BVIs/St Martin/Antigua locations. Do keep an eye out for reefs which are mostly well marked but plentiful. Also, the runs between islands are all in open water so will be impacted by the weather. Island Summary. Palomino was a quick day one sail from the base-nice shakeout overnight stop with busy but fun beach scene. 3 nights in Culebra which was awesome including partying with the locals in Dewey on New Years Eve. Grande Tamarindo/Flamenco Beach/Culebrita were highlights. 2 nights in Vieques. The main town Esperanza was nice with good restaurant choices. Self appointed harbor master Chase was quite helpful in arranging moorings and local information. South beaches were mostly blown out due to unusual southeast swell. Green beach on west coast was spectacular.
We have chartered the new Jeanneau 349 from Sail Caribe in late February/March 2015. We saw the boat recently at the Annapolis boat show; it's the perfect size for the two of us.Have heard and read good things about the Sail Caribe folks. We were in Culebra last November and are looking to go back for some great snorkeling, especially at The Wall and off Zoni beach (among other places). We also are looking forward to visiting Vieques for some snorkeling. If anyone can offer advice on a nine-day sail plan it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
This was the second time our two families chartered with SailCaribe. We love the well cared for boats and the great staff. Knowledgable people who truly care about their customers and their crafts. We look forward to going again.
Thanks Jim and Karen for yet another fantastic experience in the Spanish Virgin Islands. Just like last time (about 2 years ago) this sailboat charter trip was handled in the most professional manner! I have chartered with the big guys, but I have to say that my dealings with you and all of your team were so much more personal, but no less professional!Form the safety briefing and getting is aboard to the easy final checkout and the help with local transportation (Victor is great!) it was all "smooth sailing" (excuse the pun!) :).Already planning my next trip and maybe I can try to get a group together to charter one of your beautiful cats net time! Thanks again!
I cannot say enough about how wonderful our experience was with Sail Caribe. Their staff was knowledgeable, available and so friendly. My husband and I, our two small children, and the grandparents chartered a 45' Lagoon catamaran for a week this July. My husband and I are both certified to captain and have chartered in the BVIs previously. We found the check-out and debriefing on the boat with Pedro to be quite thorough and really helped us learn the particulars of this specific vessel as well as the geography. Maria was also very helpful in answering our questions and very welcoming to our family. Sailing the Spanish Virgin Islands again with Sail Caribe is definitely in our future! It was an incredible week in the most beautiful area we have sailed thus far, and we cannot wait to return!
Ditto to all of the other reviews! We cannot say enough - Jim, Maria and the rest of the staff were great and went out of their way to make our charter first class. From the pick-up at the airport, arrival to the boat thru the detailed checkout and briefing - it is the best charter out of 20+ years chartering all over the world for us! Batubara was a brand new "luxury" catamaran which had bells and whistles we are not used to! The linens provided were fresh and the beds made! The galley had everything and it was clean! There were 8 of us - all experienced sailors - which took Sail Caribe by surprise when we returned with 3/4 tank of water remaining and didn't use much fuel! We are looking forward and chartering again and staying longer! Thanks to Jim and his staff for professionalism and maintaining the equipment! It made the tropical wave of rain that stayed with us the week not so bad! The rainforest is a must before or after the charter too!To top the trip off - we saw one of the Pirates of the Caribbean ships docked awaiting for the new movie to shoot! and this is where Captain Ron was filmed! Adding to the amusement - our motto during the trip was......Well if anything's going to happen it's going to happen out there!
I cannot say enough good things about Sail Caribe. They treated us like friends or family would treat you. They took the time to make sure we understood all about the boat and area. Gave us a good sense of where to anchor with the current weather. Very thorough but in a nice manner to make sure we would have a good time and not run into troubles. This was our 7th charter in various places and we have now used 5 charter bases. Have been happy with the other 4 charter operations but Sail Caribe was by far the best of the five. There was a smile on everyone’s face all the time. Whatever our request, they never acted like it was an imposition. And they seemed the most competent of all the charter operations. Everything worked on the boat.
Sail Caribe is very professional and customer-friendly. Jim and Maria did everything possible to make our Christmas SVI charter one of our best family trips ever. The pre-arrival communication was excellent and Maria answered all of our questions promptly. The Lagoon 40 cat was perfect for our group of five. The boat was clean and well maintained. Victor was very helpful meeting our group at the airport and stopping at the supermarket for provisioning. The marina is well located for a cruise of the SVI. The islands, particularly Culebra, are stunning and are not as crowded as the BVIs during high season. I highly recommend Sail Caribe.
So happy to have discovered the SVI !!!Sail Caribe was wonderful to work with, we had a minor glitch with some luggage not arriving with us and Maria (the manager at Sail Caribe) went above and beyond to get our items to us even though we were anchored at Culebra by the time the boxes showed up!I would highly recommend this company to work with on your next charter.
Our sailing vacation was great. Sail Caribe is a very professional charter company with excellent service and the Spanish Virgin Islands (SVIs) are like unsung heroes - we loved them. Our trip started with Victor picking us up at San Juan airport and taking us to a grocery store to provision. We were then dropped off at the marina where we were transported with our stuff to the boat by a golf cart towing a trailer. The cab fare was reasonable and the facilities at Fajadro were first class.I have been to the BVIs four times and was looking for an alternative in the Caribbean that is easy to get to. I never heard of the SVIs until I saw an ad in Sail magazine. I am so happy we saw them before they are spoiled by too much tourism. There are plenty of places to tie up to a mooring ball or anchor and the beaches are fantastic. The SVIs are definitely a low key alternative to the BVIs - less crowded but still have an abundance of natural beauty. Not to mention that Dewey on New Year Eve is a kick.I hope to return to the SVIs and expect I will have an even better time as I will know more about my favorite spots.
We chartered a 36' Hunter. Nov 4-14, 2012.Here is a copy of the email I sent to Sailcaribe after we returned home:Jim and Staff at Sailcaribe,We just wanted to thank you for a great charter. Your personal service from booking to leaving to head home, professionalism and attention to our needs was the best we ever had from any charter company over the years. Please make sure Ziggy hears this message also. He has a real good attitude and seems like a very dedicated worker. We had a good trip back home and hope you all enjoy the Holidays. Best Regards
This is my 6th charter in the Caribbean and second time chartering with Caribe Charters. We chartered a Jeanneau 409 and as before (in 2010), everything was excellent and ready for us to start our 10 day journey through the Spanish, US and British VI's. Jim and Debbie run a great operation and Marie was always impeccable with her reservations and onsite communication. I have met Jim many times at boat shows in the US and he always knows my name and goes out of his way to say hi. I consider them friends now and will certainly charter with them again and again. Thanks Jim, Debbie and Marie Another great vacation!
Every aspect of our experience with Jim and Debbie was professional, personal, friendly and impressive. These guys are great !! Started off with a warm welcome from cabbie Victor who brought us from the airport and talked the whole way to the marina. We had a very friendly Maria waiting for us at the boat despite our late arrival. Check out with Pedro was personal, friendly, informative and he got us out in a timely fashion. Support on the trip from Jim was top notch right down to the ever friendly technician Popo who did a great job on a repair needed. I've rented from 5 companies on 9 different bareboat charters and I'd have to say Sail Caribe rates amongst the best of them. The Spanish Virgins were fantastic and I hope to see them again, and when I do, Sail Caribe will be my choice of Charter Companies. Sincerely.....thank you Jim and Deb.From: Sail Team Gilbert
